Dear Memo,

Don't be so over-the-top about the whole thing, O.K.?

(I already was! wink ).

The juggling was during the Vigil the night before and before the Monstrance was brought up to the Altar.

The Pope himself leaned forward to see the juggling.

Perhaps they reminded him of some Vatican bureaucrats he has dealt with in the past? smile

It was very beautiful and really increased my confidence in the Latin Church.

Not that you needed it . . . wink

During the events televised live worldwide by EWTN, I was craning my neck to catch a glimpse of the 2 dozen or so seminarians from China, mainland that is.

It is a given that the Pope chose the Filipino kids as representing the Catholic youth from Asia, but the Chinese seminarians, both of the government-approved PCA and of the underground, should be have been "something" to behold!

Visas to these Chinese seminarians were not granted as a "group," which would have tipped off the Communist authorities, but were granted individually to each. Then, the seminarians converged in Rome, for an audience with the Pope twice, and then travelled to Cologne to attend the 2005 WYD!

That's a mini miracle, if you are looking for one! wink

Dear Amado,

We had a group of Chinese students here from mainland China who, as I was taking them on a tour, asked me what I thought China should do too promote democracy there . . .

Of course, I told them that they should bring back the Emperor!

And they applauded me for some time, with smiles . . . smile

Dear Alex:

I am sure you emphasized only the "Emperor," and not the likes of Tz'u-hsi, the Dowager Empress of China! wink

Yes, I lived in Germany for three year. I know about their regimentation and lack of emotionalism.

Did you like the WYD 2005, Father Deacon?
I like anything that brings people closer to Our Lord and makes them want to follow Him. I didn't see much of the televised events (sadly I have to parishes to support and a book to finish writing, and that takes up most of my "free" time).

What ever happened to the "Ukrainian Youth for Christ" rallies started by Metropolitan Andrei in the 1930's? IIRC they seem to have stopped around the time the UGCC came out from the the underground in Ukraine. I never attended one of these myself, and such events do not appeal to me, but I'm curious to know what has happened.

Considering that WYD is a recent phenomenon, and the Ukrainians were doing it decades ealier, can we call WYD an Easternization of the Roman Church? :p

Dear Andriju!

Absolutely!

They sang verses from the Akathist, had an Easter icon of our Lady, Salus Populi Romae, used lots of incense and displayed great reverence!

Dear KO63AP:

So, you have finally noticed that everything the East has started, as Alex is wont to remind us Latins time and again, but mysteriously "dropped" along the way as a hot potato, the West has "picked it up" and transformed it into a "worldwide" devotion or activity?

Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the Holy Rosary, Stations of the Cross, etc. . . and, now, the World Youth Day? cool

Wonders never cease! wink

Dear Amado,

That's right!

Latinizations are simply Eastern devotions that somehow got into Western hands that really made a go of them!

I'm surprised the Administrator hasn't said anything yet . . . wink

Dear Alex:

Then, there should be no problem at all for Easterners to "recover" these "original" Eastern devotions and join us, the Latins, in a "universal" celebration of the same? wink

Junk the "latinization" label and call them "Eastern-inspired" devotions instead! biggrin

Dear Amado,

Neither Latins nor EC's believe me when I tell them just that!

Why do you think that is?

Are they jealous of me, or something? wink

Dear Alex:

As I see it, the "problem" lies in the incorrect or, shall we say "Westernized," labelling of the "goods!" wink

My apologies for misinterpreting.

I come from a diocese where such comments are made, and in earnest.
