Actually the set I was thinking of was made by Reader Jason Riessland a couple fo years ago in a studio and is called "The Eight Tones and Special Melodies according to the Russian Usage". It was previously available through New Valaam and St. John of Kronstadt and I was also told it (perhaps erroneously?) was at St. Vlad's bookstore but was not in the catalog. Perhaps you could check in the bookstore, Tony since you are a lot closer than me... There are several other written music collections from Professor Drillock et. al. that could be taken and used with CDs or tapes of the various English choirs available at St.Vlads or elsewhere and used in a teaching manner if Reader Jason's is no longer available. But unfortunately thngs seem to go in and out of stock quite often with SVS. Tony, perhaps you could suggest that one year the "Octet" make a new teaching CD of varous chant traditions with a nice accompanying book?

Diak, There is nothing of the sort that you mention in the bookstore, no learing cassettes with texts for Obikhod (I worked in the bookstor the past academic year). There are some tapes floating around of varying quality from various sources, they were not used officially in the past academic year for the Russian chant class (I was in it). There has, sadly, not been an SVS Octet that I know of (and I asked around) since '93. Tony

Tony, I heard Octet '98 perform, but perhaps there hasn't been one since then. I think you can still get some recordings from them and possibly also Octet '95.
I think the concept of the Octets was a great way not only for Dr. Drillock to hone up a crack choir with great music but for evangelization and outreach for SVS as well. But I suppose with the logistics of touring, etc. that is also difficult.

Diak, I have asked two SVS employees and one said '93 the other "early '90s" both have been here since the '80s. I am trying to track down someone from one of the last, if not the last Octet. Prof. Drillock is on vacation until next week. I will keep asking and take a walk (another) over to the bookstore today. Tony

Diak,
There is an audio recording "O Champion Leader" from the '95 Octet, according to the bookstore manager that Octet did travel. He thinks that was the last one.
Still asking.

Diak,
According to my informant here (I was not here then) that Octet did not travel. I will ask around still, that is the information that is being presented to me.

This is a small "table-top" type of Panikhida table that can easily be put on a tetrapod. I thought you might be interested in seing this. Tony

Cool, Tony. Thank God for casters (or hefty subdeacons ) That one isn't all that big. I've seen some much larger that basically were never moved once placed in the church. So Octet '98 didn't travel? I can't say anything to that since I saw them in NY back then but did see Octet '95 on the road.

I am getting conflicting reports from people who were here back then even. I am tending to think it did though but I am waiting to ask Prof. Drillock next week. The Octet used to travel on odd-numbered years (hence '95) but apparently there was a problem in '97 and that one did not travel but they made up for it in '98. The consensus is that there has not been one since '98 and it does not appear that there will be another in the foreseeable future. Tony

How's your voice, Tony? Maybe you should talk Dr. Drillock into resurrecting the Octet. And make some teaching CDs.
