Question: The Orthodox Bible I believe has several more Biblical books than Catholicism. Does the Byzantine, Maronite, etc. follow the Orthodox or Catholic books?

There are no official statements by Eastern Catholics regarding the differences between the Byzantine and Roman canons (that I know of). Generally speaking, in (for example) Slavic countries the Slavonic Bible used by Greek Catholics is the same as that used by the Orthodox.

It is not really an issue, as there is a pecking order in the Books of the Bible. The Gospels out rank everything else, and the other New Testament books have an order of precedent over the Old Testament books.

Thank you for answering my question. Would I as a Roman Catholic be able to read the Orthodox Bible or is that a question for my bishop?

Yes, a Roman Catholic can read the Orthodox Bible. Just realize that your Church does not consider all of the books to be part of the Biblical Canon. That does not mean they are not useful.

Of course, as these books are at the end of the pecking order one should probably read everything else in the Bible first! biggrin

They have the largest canon. The Book of Enoch and the Book of Jubilees are the two most famous additions to their Canon.

Then when Christianity began they added the 27 books of the New Testament.

Then the Catholics had Jerome translate the Greek Bible into Latin and called it the Vulgate. They kept the exact same arrangement but left off 4 books.

26. ECCLESIASTICUS

Finally with the Protestant Reformation the Germans and English established their own 66 book Bible Canon. They used the same contents as the original Hebrew Masoretic Text Bible. But they kept the exact same arrangement as the Greek and Latin Bibles.

...THE LAW...................THE PROPHETS............THE WRITINGS........

.1. Genesis...................23. Isaiah....................45. Romans

20. Proverbs.................42. Luke.......................64. 3 John
21. Ecclesiastes............43. John.......................65. Jude
22. Song of Solomon......44. Acts.......................66. Revelation

So notice how this new Protestant 66 book bible fits so perfectly under the original Hebrew Bible headings of the "Law, Prophets and Writtings. The colomn under the Prophets is all prophets. The colomn under the Writings is all writings or epistles.

Then it is remarkably set up with the first five books in the first colomn being the "Pentatuch." The last five books in this colomn are called the "wisdom literature."
In the second colomn the first five books are called the "major Prophets." The last five books in this colomn are the "Gospels of the New Testament and Acts." This arrangement was not set up by men. They never changed anything as can be seen by comparing the above four Bible Canons.

*- note that the extra books in the Greek and Latin Bible canons are typed out in Capital letters for easier identification.

The Ethiopic version of the Old and New Testament was made from the Septuagint. It includes the book of Enoch, Baruch, and the third and fourth Esdras. In the international Bible studies there are certain books belonging to the class usually designated pseudepigraphic. The whole Christendom and whole-learned world owes a debt of gratitude to the church of Ethiopia for the preservation of those documents.

Among these books is the book of Enoch which throws so much light on Jewish thought on various points during the centuries immediately preceding the Christian era. The book of Jubilee (Kufale, i.e. Division) otherwise known as the Little Genesis has also been preserved entire only in the Ethiopic version.

I'm a Roman Catholic who's not a big fan of the Old Testament. Does the Byzantine Rite focus equally on the old and new testaments?

The Byzantine rite uses mainly the old testament for epistle readings and the new testament for the Gospels. The readings aren't like they are in the roman rite.

The Byzantine Church currently reads the Old Testament at Vespers for feasts and during the Great Fast. This really does not amount to very much of the OT.

Matins for Sundays and Feasts include a Gospel. On Sundays it is one of the Resurrection Gospels. For feasts, it is a Gospel account associated with that feast.

The Divine Liturgy includes a reading from the Acts of the Apostles or one of the Epistles and then a Gospel reading.

The Byzantine Lectionary can be found at: https://www.byzcath.org/index.php/resources-mainmenu-63/lectionary-mainmenu-114
