My only guess is that Exodus 15 is the first of the nine biblical odes around which the canon hymns are composed; I think the connection between an ode and the composer of the Great Canon is solid. Why that particular verse among the nine odes, I am not sure.

The opening lines of any document are usually how we remember it. "We the people", "When in the course of human events", etc. are some examples. The icon painter's manual of Dionysius of Fourna also states that this phrase is to be inscribed on the scroll of Saint Andrew of Crete.
