My name is Jeff. My Great-Grandparents were Slovak (rusyn) immigrants who initially lived in Sheppton, PA in the 1890s. They moved to Minneapolis in the late 1890s and were early members of St Mary's Orthodox Cathedral. I believe they were married in St John's Russian Orthodox Church in Sheppton in 1896. Does anyone know any of St John's (Sheppton) history? I believe it was built in 1894/5 and closed in the mid 1980s. I also know that both St John's in Mayfield (early 2000s) and Holy Trinity in McAdoo (around 2014) tried to save the building but were unsuccessful. It has been torn down. Any information appreciated.

Over a decade ago Fr.Jon documented many of the Byzantine Catholic and Orthodox Churches of the NE Pennsylvania "coal country".

Thanks Fr. Deacon Thomas. Interesting link. St John's was on West Market St and a wooden structure. I think Fr. John's thread had pictures.. Does anyone know where the church records might have gone? Fr. John at St John's in Mayfield (who tried to save the building) said his parish doesn't have them. Maybe the OCA diocese or the county historical society?

I would start with the OCA Diocese.

What more can you tell me about the history and efforts to save St. John's Russian Orthodox Church in Sheppton, PA, and do you know where I might find any remaining records or photographs of the church?
