Praised be Jesus Christ!
Does anyone know where I might find a scan of the Chlib Duši prayer book? I know some members of this forum scanned it and uploaded it to a site that, unfortunately, has since been taken down.

I wish I knew more about what that was. But, I am going to go ahead and leave a comment to help you find it.

I volunteer at the SS Cyril & Methodius Seminary Library in Pittsburgh, PA. We have a number of чліб души - člib dusi in our collection. None are yet scanned. Is there a particular publisher or year you are looking for?

I might be able to help with specific questions. Or perhaps move up one of these in my scan agenda for particular research needs. Right now I'm focused on liturgical music collections.

Not any particular year or publisher (in fact, this is the first time I have heard that multiple publishers exist). If you'd be willing to add it to the scanning list, I would be more than grateful. Honestly I have heard many things about Chlib Duši from different people, from critics to praises, and it really piqued my curiosity to see what is actually in it.

We have about 25 or so of these in the collection. They are a type of personal prayer books meant for use by the faithful. The collection spans from the 1880s to the 1960s. They range in size from 100-500 pages. I will take a general inventory of what we have next week and let you know what the collection looks like.

We do keep the first 4 categories together in that set of around 25 as they are mostly chlib duši with just a few under those alternative names.

The Nebesni Manna collection is similar in nature and size using a more "spiritual" name for the prayer book.

The larger numbers of personal prayer books are in the Molitvennik/Sbornik/Izbornik categories. These are focused on personal and liturgical texts needed by the people for liturgical usage. These are the traditional people's prayer book collection names.

And the Anhel chranitel molitvennik are children's version of personal prayerbooks.

Personal Prayer book collection categories:
Хліб души chlib duši
Кормъ души Korm duši
Дрога до щастя вїчнаго Droha do ščasťa vjičnaho
Друтъ души молитвословъ Druť duši molitvoslov

Небесны манна Nebesni Manna

молитвенникъ Molitvennik
Сборникъ Sbornik
Ізборник Izbornik

Ангелъ хранитель молитвенникъ Anhel chranitel molitvennik

I've prepared a pdf file that contains the covers, title pages along with the first and last pages and the table of contents for the personal prayer books in what I'd consider this category. These are all using some combination of bread and soul "spiritual" names for the title instead of the more tradition names of personal prayer books. These are roughly in date order but about a half dozen do not have printed dates of origin. The pdf has a cover page and table of contents showing where each publication begins. If different enough I have included both ornate covers when we have two copies in the collection.

Hopefully this will give you enough information to see if one of these publications is of further interest.

The file is too large to upload here so I have this on my personal web site for now.

Heavenly Manna: Nebesnaja Manna, a practical prayer book of devotions for Greek Rite Catholics (Uniontown, 1960), and Chľib Duši: Ili Sobranije Molitv i Pisnej by Aleksander Duchnovič (Perth Amboy,1949,) seem to be exactly what I’m looking for. If you’re able to get those scanned, I would be very grateful.
On side note, since you seem to have a good relationship with the library staff and superiors, it might be worth suggesting them to consider starting a digital collection (if one doesn't already exist). It is indeed a shame that their rich treasure of Rusyn Catholic publishings goes somewhat unnoticed.

I'll get started on full scans for the two requested books and let you know when they are complete.

We recently obtained a loan and partnership with the PA Power Library project that provides the hardware and final hosting for these types of archival material. The focus right now is on more unique music provided in donations from priests and cantors. The results get uploaded and hosted at PA Power Library.
https://powerlibrary.org/category/collection-subjects/byzantine-catholic-seminary-library/

More detail and links are then added to the catalog entries when searched there as well. The process does take some time and collections of personal prayer books, priestly prayer book, language teaching, folk arts material and liturgical books are all in process.

And as you can see, we respond to specific requests from individual researchers as they come in.

Christ is in our midst!!

Steve,

Did you see the other thread we have recently had about prayerbooks? There is one that has come back into print because of the generosity of the family of the priest who first composed it. It had been out of print until now.

Bob
