Dear Daniil,

Surely no Christian person is a lost cause. Christ died for all. Furthermore, it's thanks to Patriarch Alexei II that Russia is not a Communist country today. I refer to his throwing the entire weight of his office behind democracy when a Communist coup looked like it was going to roll back everything post-Gorbachev. And, further, friends in Moscow tell me that he serves the Liturgy very prayerfully, very wonderfully. I believe he is a man of strong faith who is helping greatly as the Russian people begin to recover their genuine Christian roots.

Dear Father Aidan:

I wish that I could believe the Moscow Patriarch is a holy man, but I have very serious doubts.

There is a certain spiritual ugliness, which comes forth in his public statements, which is not Christ-like.

As to saving Russia from Communism, he had the least role of any person involved in that drama.

If I were in his shoes I too would have thrown in my lot with the pro-democracy advocates, what else could a rational person do?

Anyhow what support did communism ever give to the Russian Orthodox Church? he owed them nothing.

These may be harsh words but this is how I see things.
