Dear Michael, When the Saint of the Day or of the parish is mentioned in the final dismissal, priest and people will cross themselves as in "And our Father among the Saints Nicholas of Myra in Lycia . . ." According to the Catechism of St Peter Mohyla, one is to bow following the making of the Sign of the Cross i.e. when one's hand is released from the left shoulder and hangs again at one's side. Don't you just hate it when things aren't done correctly? Alex

Dear Alex,
When all of the communicants (who have prepared a received the blessing to receive the Holy Gifts)gather in the front-centre of the temple at this point, they stand behind the priest as he passes into the altar and the significance of these words comes out. The priest who in his priesthood is the icon of Christ passes into the holy of holies, our foretaste of the heaven, our promised land.

Dear Alex,
This is true of the Old Rite practice. Where others touch the floor when making the bow to the poyas Old Believers tend not to, despite the podruchnik.

Interestingly enough, the same Catechism was an attempt by Mohyla to unite both Greek and Russian (Old Rite) traditions.
Mohyla describes the making of the Sign of the Cross the Greek way, using the Trinitarian invocation.
But then he adds that we must always say the Jesus Prayer following it.
Later teachers in that Kyivan Baroque tradition, while maintaining the three-fingered Sign of the Cross, also taught that one may always substitute the Jesus Prayer for the Trinitarian invocation when making it.
