Mor, I can greatly appreciate that post. You spoke with alot of maturity. How old are you? Myself I'm 30. I have the feeling your younger then that. Not only do I continue to learn, but I often learn from even those younger then myself. If you decide to stay Orthodox and outside communion with Rome, well... we hope you find happiness and do well. But I'd hope you would come into the Church (in communion with Rome), we could use some tough level headed kids like you. Well your already half way there, you have one of those fiesty Roman Catholic women by your side. And Mor, about the head scarfs. I believe those superb specimens you call Indian women demonstrate the apropriate way to wear'em - wraped around the curves of their bodies. As for your girlfriend - I try to stay out of the way of women with vendettas. P.S. - if I may offer a suggestion as to why marrying a woman of the Catholic or Orthodox faith may be of importance... it is as I see it our duty to have children for God first and then for our selves second. The greater the house hold fosters a devotion and fidelity to Christ and Church, all more the greater for Christ and Church. Nice To Have Met You

To answer your question, Max, I'm twenty. I'm probably the youngest in these parts... And Indian women sure know how to wear a veil, as you said...it's the clothing...saris and such...it helps. Sometimes I'm glad our Church still keeps men on one side and women on the other...if segregation didn't exist, I might have a hard time praying...but that's just me! (That sounds so bad, doesn't it? ) And my girlfriend, for all I may say about Sicilians, is a very sweet young lady. Her family, however, might be another story...I have a feeling they'd think the Eastern Catholics to be weird, and the Orthodox even weirder...that's part of the reason she'd want me to be Catholic...less of a bother. While I don't agree with that reason so much, I like her more important reason...having a household that wasn't a mixed Orthodox-Catholic thing would be good for the kids. I can dig it! As for which I'd be, that's still up in the air...with the Lord. I have a feeling I might end up Catholic anyway, since I wanted to be such for a long time, and perhaps these concerns are just last minute jitters. Or maybe I'll become Orthodox... :p At any rate, I'll keep in touch. God bless! [ 01-31-2002: Message edited by: Mor Ephrem ]

As for looking to Leviticus for our rules to live by, ISTM that we tend to be quite selective. Who chooses which Levitical laws we observe, and which are "outmoded?" I dunno. I religiously follow the levitical prohibition on wearing polyester suits! Axios http://www.axios.net

Maximus dear, As you will find out should you have children, babies will grab anything. (Older babies will then attempt to stuff said object into his or her mouth.) Mantillas, earrings and glasses are favorites, as are beards. Each of our children has taken their turn at trying to rip my husband's face off. As for hand washing, you are more than welcome to hand wash anything you like. (I have plenty of other things to do with my limited time.) Mor Ephrem - who knows? You might be surprised. The Byzantine influence was not excatly unknown 'round Italy & Sicily. Her family might not be entirely weirded out. Finally, in some of the more recent posts to this thread, I get the peculiar sense that I am walking past a frat house, overhearing a couple of the guys discussing the attire of the women who walk by. It's not a Horrible Thing, but I find it a rather amusing development in a thread about an old & pious practice. I am reminded of a snippet from the Desert - seems a couple of the monks were out walking one day, and they saw a couple of women monastics. Wanting to "put them in their place," they called out something like "Oh you women think you're so great" or some such. One of the Handmaids of the Lord replied "Had you been a true monk, you would not have noticed that we were women." Warmest wishes to you young'uns from the Old Broad (I'm 41, guys.) Wearing mantilhas because of sins against the sacrament, really?
I have never heard of such a thing, I just love it.
This is something I haave to remember.

PS. Mom raised three kids and then some, always took them to church, and always wore a mantilha. She has some which are over 60 years of age.

Defreitas,
Some of the old mantillas are just magnificent - handmade re-emboidered lace and the like.
I didn't know about the reparation thing either, but I hang out on a mostly RC homeschooling board (funny, 'cause my husband is the homeschooler) and a couple of the ladies were talking about it. There was even a link provided - I expect if you searched someplace like EWTN you could find it.
Best,
Sharon

Oh, oh, oh, that I could grow a proper beard...
Being chinese, and as chinese are not a hairy people, all I end up with is a vague fuzz, which when longer, turns into a Fu-Manchu-looking thing - not very dignified looking with any sort of vestments, I think.
*growl*
Yours in Domino,

Edward,
You are as God made you.
If hair were a salable commodity, we'd be rich. I've seen my husband's bare face once in the 19 years we have known one another. (Thank goodness the beard grew back quickly - I barely recognized that pink faced man) I'd share if it were practical, but alas, it is not, and besides, our brown wavy stuff would look very silly with your straight black.
Perhaps the answer is to emulate the ancient Egyptians. Those Pharaohs who could not grow their own facial hair wore artificial beards. I seem to recall a "Dilbert" story line where Dilbert had to rent a beard in order to attend a techno-weenie conference. A beard rental concession was provided. Perhaps those who insist upon facial hair for men would provide the same service. That would take care of David, too.
SO whaddaya think?
Very Seriously Yours,
Sharon

Dear Sharon et al:
This beard & hair thing is getting a little weird.
But then again.
Recently my brother-in-law commented on the fact that I had let my hair grow [I do that occasionally] and asked if I had taken a Nazarite vow.
I know it has something to do with the old Patriarchs and St. John the Baptist but can anyone comment further?
Hair I am.

As I understand it, should you take such a vow, you would have no need to fear having a baby to pull your long hair or beard.
Some lines of thought hold that Joseph had taken Nazirite vows.
Cheers,
Sharon

Ah, Cantress Sharon,
I have oft amused myself by thinking of getting a beard with hooks that go behind the ears - sort of what people playing Father Christmas use.
Having 12 years of stage experience, I could whip up a realistic-looking beard with spirit gum and crepe hair, but I doubt I'd want to do that every morning - the laying of a crepe-hair beard takes upwards of 45 minutes!
Your in Christ,
Edward
