I am quite distressed about this: A friend of mine who lives in the City of Brotherly Love (Philadelphia, PA) called me this afternoon to tell me that after Mass in a Philadephia R.C. parish the recessional song was the "Philadelphia Eagles Fight Song", sung by full choir and the celebrant who remarked that his green vestments were worn in honor of the Super Bowl and the Eagles. Now I am not a rigorist and I am from Philadelphia and I love the Eagles but I felt that this was way over the top and disrespectful to the Divine Liturgy and to the Person of the Son of God. Am I making too big a deal over this? Any thoughts? Silouan, monk

Apparently the Lord was NOT well-pleased with their chant. Dave

Trashy and inappropriate music is too often the norm in RC churches, but this is way over the top.

Hmm - with my RC hat on - summat I rarely do these days
You are perfectly correct - this was way over top and should not be permitted - this sort of thing makes me really annoyed.
However green vestments were the order of the day so his statement that they were in honour etc was baloney, pure and simple .
If he had not been using green then questions should have been asked - though it has to be admitted that he can always use the most noble ones the Church permit UNLESS they are forbidden because of the season.

Dave ROFL! That made my day - thanks! What's next - the Offertory half-time show?!? Not to be prudish, but this was ridiculous. Now that sports and politics can be the focus of the Mass, perhaps they should try...religion? Now there's a controversial topic! Pray for me and forgive me for I am a sinner! Gordo

We prayed for the Steelers at the end of Divine Liturgy and sang Many Years 2 weeks ago... that didn't work either.

Dear Fr. Silouan, EVLOGITE! Of course this is NOT something that is acceptable...it's poor judgment at best---a scandal at its worse and a complete lack of respect for the holiness of the Liturgy. But what troubles me most, I think is that there seems to be a total lack of understanding of what Liturgy IS! This happens (I believe) when people (and especially priests) lack a healthy and deep personal relationship with the Lord, and this is manifested usually by a lack of working daily at regular systematic prayerlife. When people/priests stop working at the difficult job of regular prayer---then all manner of reverence and piety ceases and everything becomes worldly and mundane. When people experience this in the Church, they quickly recognize it and stop attending services and it even weakens their faith. This is why the Church is not what it should be...because priests do not 'set the tone' and uplift the people of God by example. Pray for priests! Pray for the Church!
Lord have mercy!
In that great mercy, +Fr. Gregory
+Father Archimandrite Gregory, who asks for your holy prayers!

When we were first married, and we weren't Catholic, we lived in Phoenix. The Phoenix Suns went to the playoffs or NFL Championship or something that year... We went to church (again, NOT Catholic) and they had a TV in the worship area to watch the game. Honestly, they kept it on and pre-empted the service! We left and never went back there. It was a few months later that we decided to become Byzantine Catholic. Tammy

Are any aberrant innovations in the Mass really so surprising after Vatican II ?

Yes, I live outside of Philly, and the night before the Mummers Parade (Dec. 31st), they have a special Mummer's Mass, and the priest "struts" down the isle to the music of a string band.
So what else is new?
