If it was the teaching of The Church then Orthodox and Catholics would do it. They also believe the Orthodox and Catholic Churchs to be in serious error, so I think pass on their interpretation of scripture.
As for adult eduation I think you have answered your own question. Your going to do it and good on you.

Pavel,
But if your Church isn't leading Bible Study and you believe they should then God may well be calling you to lead. As the Sean Connery character said to Eliot Ness "Then, what are YOU going to do about it?"

When I joined St. Ann's five years ago, it wasn't very long at all before Fr. Mike began to make comments in the sacristy about the fact that one of my carry overs from my days in Protestantism is tithing. Quite frankly, I think it initially floored him. He acted amazed at the fact that I considered this to be de rigeure behavior for a believer. I think that your mention of tithing is particularly relevant to today's situation. It is also something that is unfortunately misunderstood by many Catholics and Orthodox. At my two last Orthodox parishes, our parish priest strongly encouraged tithing and, in fact, made it a virtual requirement for any person seeking parish office.

Tithing is Good!! Bingo is boring and a poor way to raise money for the Church.
That's what my pastor says.

CDL Well said. There is also the ascetical element of tithing which strongly recommends it. Our struggle and sacrifice must also include what is most dear to most Americans, our money. Our Lord admonishes us "For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven." Both the Pharisee and scribes tithed. Accordingly how much more is to be expected of us?

You know, in regards to tithing, while I heard a lot of messages in some assemblies which were of the genre "Either you give your 10% to God or He will take it out of your hide" (complete with personal horror stories of how people who neglected to tithe were always spending the money they should have given to God on new starters for their car, doctor's bills, etc.)I also heard a lot of teaching that when we are "saved" God owns all of me, including my checkbook. Tithing was a call to discipline myself to give myself unreservedly. A lot of proper messages in Protestantism stress this factor of giving of ourselves.
Look, if you can't give something simple like money, how is God going to get you to give Him something difficult?
I'm curious to ask though -- if anyone knows -- where, when, and how did tithing get knocked out of the Catholic Faith as being expected from the faithful?
