I usually don't wear such a big neck cross but that day I had on one I'd been given that was probably about 3 1/2 inches long--a gift. It did the trick, though. Not only do the Jehovahs stay away, but they must have passed the word to the Mormons, too, because none of these groups has bothered me since and they hit the neighbors as regularly as Sunday comes around. biggrin

In Christ,

Dear Bob,

I think we should all wear a large neck Cross - it is truly great for witnessing - no pun intended . . .

The various cults today prey on those they think are not all that attached to their Church.

Wearing a big Cross is a mute testimony that declares in no uncertain terms where our allegiance truly is!

The West has a beautiful tradition of wearing a three-inch Cross on a thirty inch chain to make up the number 33 for the years Christ was on earth.

The Benedictine Crosses that one can get in the stores are like that.

Dearest Alex,

A problem down here is that a huge expensive gold or silver cross is considered as "just" bling to many of the younger adults. It is not worn with respect, but instead as a fashion item.

It is really sad sometimes.

Does anyone know the rules regarding who gets to wear the Panagia?

It takes at least 3 Bishops first to make another bishop and then that new bishops gets to wear the Panagia as they they do. So dont buy one unless you are going to be made a bishop anytime soon.

Dear Michael,

Ah, but we need not wear an expensive Cross!

Traditionally, Orthodox Christians wear one of bronze or brass - to signify the connection with the bronze serpent that Moses raised in the desert when the children of Israel were being bitten by the snakes.

And our Lord Himself compared His crucifixion to that event in the 3rd chapter of John, I believe.

I have an Old Believer Cross made of stainless steel . . .

So let's all put on the "armour of Christ" to avert the darts of the evil one!

Dear Incogneat,

I also believe that every Christian should wear (or have on their person) an "All Holy" medallion of the Mother of God which is an icon of the Incarnation!

The Royal Doors of the Iconostasis are flanked by icons of the Mother of God and of Christ.

These are, in fact, two icons of Christ - the first one represents His First Coming and the other His Second Coming.

The space in between represents our life in Christ as we wait for His Second Coming.

I've got the EWTN catalogue in front of me. They're offereing a sterling silver three-bar Russian cruxifix 1 1/2 inches long on a 20 inch rhodium chain for $24.00 plus shipping. Not bad looking either.

I have a Benedictine crucifix on a black cord that has the St. Benedict medal in it--"the Cross of a happy death"--that cost very little. It is black enamel around the corpus, but can be had in other enamel colors if one looks through enough catalogues.

My favorite response to those cultists is to hand them my Greek New Testament and say "let's read from this one so that we are on the same page." They just get angry and leave. I do feel bad afterwards however because I missed a good opportunity to share the true word with them.
