Marc brings up an interesting question, though, from a theological perspective.

Given the fact that Sunday is the Lord's Day and, as I understand the canons is not to be a day of penance, should not the rules for any fasting season be mitigated for this day? (A little oasis in the desert? wink )

St. Peter Moghila in his Orthodox Catechism states that Saturdays and Sundays are not fasting days during minor fasts.

I think the Archeparchy of Pgh has moved the Christmas Eve strict fast to Friday before, since Christmas eve is a sunday.

not sure what I think about this...

is it OK to do the strict fast on a sunday anyway?

Fr. Anthony, thank you for the advice. I'll see what he says, but I was hoping for more of a blanket statement on the issue. I have no reason not to hold the strict fast, but if the Church says "don't, have some fish", then I'll have some fish.

Marc,

Here are the "Remarks" printed on my parish calendar:

Dec. 22 - The Divine Liturgy is not celebrated today, and Royal Hours are transferred to this day. Day of simple abstinence or equivalent penance. By tradition, day of strict abstinence from meat and dairy products.

Dec. 24 - Vigil of Christmas. Today may be observed as a day of simple abstinence. The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom for the Sunday before Christmas is celebrated in the morning. If a Vigil Liturgy is celebrated on Sunday evening, it is the Liturgy of St. Basil & the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is celebrated on Monday. If no Divine Liturgy is celebrated on Sunday evening, then the Liturgy of St. Basil is celebrated on Christmas Day (Monday morning).
