I guess some would welcome Fidel Castro into their Church, but would tell John Paul II to go sit with the babushkas?

I don't think a beard is a sign of Holiness.

Dear Diak - the moustache trimming does avoid worries or disasters with Holy Communion.

Tony,

Metropolitan Herman was Metropolitan of Finland in the 1910s and 20s. He was responsible for the new calendar.

ukrainiancatholic,

Vladimirski Sobor in Kiev (painted by Vasnetsov).

Concerning beards,
I know that the custom of the Pochaev Lavra is to trim the beard short like Iov of Pochaev but not to cut their hair.

St. Andrew Sheptytsky shepherded a two-edged Church. Kyr Nicholas Charnetsky and Kyr Nikita Budka both lived and both died for this Church. The Eastern and the Western, the bearded and the shaven, the New World Bishop and the Old.

But how long until Rome recognizes his saintliness and years of service? Probably too long. This is one thing all Slavic Byzantines should be pressuring Rome to do...canonize him or we'll do it ourself! Moe

When I don't cut my hair every 3 months or so, I end up with an afro and its more disingenious! +Philip of (Long title...could have been shorter) of the Antioch Autonomous Archiocese in America has no facial hair - but does that make him a bad priest? Priests and Monks have facial hair in imitation of Christ (and because that was the fashinable thing at the time anyway!) but its not a direct command to have a beard? Or is it? Mmm...

Metropolitan PHILIP, Primate of the autonomous Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America, now *does* have a very sparse goatee, his attempt at a beard, a beginning for him in his elder years. You almost have to search for his beard when you look at His Eminence.

Dear Brother Moe,

(As an aside, I had a massage done to me on board our cruise ship by a Serb named "Moe" and this was short for "Momir!" Very strong hands . . .)

Your point is very well taken. Everywhere here in Toronto are icons of Sheptytsky and they are now being placed up front, on iconostases etc.

Even our series of Rome-grown bishops have given up on us in this respect.

On the other hand, one good thing about having a Basilian bishop is that he is not about to touch such a wide veneration of his Basilian brother, St Andrew Sheptytsky.

There is also a precedent set where a long-time veneration of local saints amounts to "equipollent" canonization.

The many martyrs of Britain beatified by Rome had their liturgical cult confirmed, in many cases, simply because their pictures were to be found on the walls of the English college at Rome where they were privately honoured.

I do remember, although for the life of me I can't find the release now, that the Polish bishops had advised the Pope NOT to beatify Andrew Sheptytsky during his Ukraine visit.

The Pope himself had wanted to, especially since St Andrew Sheptytsky had joined with the newly canonized St Joseph Pelczar of Peremysl to consecrate a Polish bishop who later consecrated Vladyka Karol Wojtyla of Cracow . . .

Christ is Risen !!!

A Hymn was composed by Patrick Marcinko, choir director of
St. Cyril and Methodius Church in Olyphant, Pennsylvania and first
performed in 1985. This composition is a tribute to Metropolitan
Andrew Sheptytsky, the giant Ukrainian servant of the Lord, who never
stopped preaching the idea of ecumenism during the communist takeover
of his land. He is the second Andrew in the hymn, the first being
Andrew the Apostle, who blessed the hills of Kiev.

"Andrew, Andrew"

Music & Lyrics
by Patrick Marcinko, Jr.

Chorus:

Two have walked as one in the shoes of the Fisherman.

The first who came upon this shore
A time long past as told in Lore.
This man of peace with Christ he came.
Andrew, Andrew, O Great Ukraine.

Two have walked as one in the shoes of the Fisherman.

This Fisherman, who touched their soul
Blessed their hills, gathered his fold.
He preached to all, and not in vain.
Andrew, Andrew, O Great Ukraine.

Two have walked as one in the shoes of the Fisherman.

They chose this man, their Shepherd True.
A Loving Saint, their Patron, too.
He cures the sick and heals the lame.
Andrew, Andrew, O Great Ukraine.

Two have walked as one in the shoes of the Fisherman.

The winds blow North, his name spreads far
Like music unsung, sings the Kobzar.
The Slavs all know, like snow and rain.
Andrew, Andrew, O Great Ukraine.

Two have walked as one in the shoes of the Fisherman.

As centuries pass, with flame so bright
Our Bishop tall,a glorious sight.
His Love, His Hope, His name the same
Andrew, Andrew, O Great Ukraine.

Two have walked as one in the shoes of the Fisherman.

Thy neighbor as thyself, He knew
A Love for Brother, Orthodox and Jew.
A thousand years, Lord Christ does reign
Andrew, Andrew, O Great Ukraine.

Two have walked as one in the shoes of the Fisherman.

This man of God, Whom Christ addressed
Hierarch Andrew, Our Church he blessed.
With Love for Christ, they spoke the same
Andrew, Andrew, O Great Ukraine.

Two have walked as one in the shoes of the Fisherman.

We celebrate and Honor True
Our Christian Faith, His Gift to you.
God Grant our wish, O Saintly Name
Andrew, Andrew, O Great Ukraine.

Two have walked as one in the shoes of the Fisherman.

Christ is Risen!

Dear khouri40, the Basilian Press in Toronto had some icon prints the last time we were there (last September) of St. Andrey Sheptytsky. There are some hand-written icons of him around, including in the chapel of Holy Transfiguration Monastery in California, Mother of God Monastery in Ontario, and Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church in Palatine, Illinois. I'm sure there are others around as well.
