I guess that I'm confused. Has this thread gone from icons of the Theotokos to western style vs. eastern style?
My point was/is: VERY FEW traditional icononography of the Theotokos shows her without her Son. A perusal of any icon catalog will show that.
Now I have no problems with icons written in a western style. One of my favorite churches, St. Michael's in Terryville, CT has a floor to ceiling screen and entire walls covered with western style icons. It was built in 1911. That was the style. It was the vogue. That church is a period piece, unscathed by the screen smashers of the 40's, 50's and 60's.
I'm just perplexed how the miraculous medal could be viewed as an eastern icon. Period.

Aw heck, *everything* starts in the East ... and ends up in the West. (Watch the sun tomorrow if you don't believe me. ) P.S. Joke! Joke! Joke! (I have learned to label them! )

You aren't the only one, John. It's a very bizarre notion to me, no matter which genius said it! :-)

Besides, anything that happens in France is Eastern, compared to us. Originally posted by Theist Gal: Originally posted by John K: [b] I'm just perplexed how the miraculous medal could be viewed as an eastern icon. Period.

Originally, Father Silouan posted a piece of an article which suggested that the Miraculous Medal was an icon and has more in common with Eastern iconography than Western, and possibly that the Mother of God revealed it to be something that brings East and West together. Alex and others have mentioned many Western representations of the Theotokos that have been adopted in the East (particulary in Slavic lands). I have no problem with this; one of my favorite icons is the "Semistrelnaya" (Seven Arrows) and the similar "Umahchenie Zlich Serdec" (Softener of Hard Hearts), which is obviously adopted from the West. However, no one can say it originated in the East, or that it is particulary traditional for Orthodox iconography. The same for the Miraculous Medal and like representations. Even if/when it was used by some Orthodox (either in its pre- or post-Laboure form), I do not think one can say it has more in common with the East than the West. This is not to say that icons originating or patterned after something from the West cannot be integrated into Eastern use. We just can't then say that the East came up with it first! Perspective must be maintained. Dave
