Akathist to the Holy Hieromartyr Theodore of Mukachevo

Kontakion 1

Let all those who love to keep the memorials of the martyrs of Christ gather to sing a hymn of victory in honour of our Father among the Saints, Theodore, whom the Lord has received into heaven as our new protector and intercessor before His Throne of Divine mercy. The angels have crowned him as a champion athlete of God who steadfastly defended Christ's Church to the shedding of his blood. We, the seed of his sacrifice, having been established on the rock of his faith, do earnestly sing:

Rejoice, O Holy Father Theodore, New Hieromartyr of Christ and Defender of Orthodoxy!

Ikos 1

O Father Theodore, your name means, "Gift of God." Our Church has been anointed by your heroic struggles as a great shepherd and pastor protecting the flock entrusted to you by Christ. In gratitude to the Holy Trinity who has given us the great gift of your person and martyrdom to our Church, we exclaim:

Rejoice, New Theodore Stratelates, leading the soldiers of Christ!
Rejoice, defender of Christ's Church to the shedding of your blood!
Rejoice, protector of your people, on earth and in heaven!

Rejoice, sacred gift to our Church in its moment of greatest sorrow and need!
Rejoice, bestowing the gifts of God's Grace to those who invoke you!
Rejoice, generous supplier of all that we lack!

Rejoice, like Theodore of old, warning the Church of impending danger!
Rejoice, keeping us firm by your example of steadfastness!
Rejoice, new bearer of the keys of the unity of the Church!

Rejoice, our heavenly intercessor and protector, quick to hear!
Rejoice, following Christ to the Cross!
Rejoice, sharing in His Resurrection and Victory!

Rejoice, O Holy Father Theodore, New Hieromartyr of Christ and Defender of Orthodoxy!

Kontakion 2

Born to God-loving parents, you set out to walk in the ways of God early in your life, Father Theodore. Your sole desire was to serve God as His priest and to minister to His people of Carpathian Ruthenia. Thanking God for the wonders of His grace to prepare you for your high calling, we sing: Alleluia!

Ikos 2

Everyone is drawn to the young Theodore who is in their midst as a living icon of Christ our God. Excelling in studies, Theodore's mind aspires, rather, to the knowledge of God. A friend to all, he reflects the love of Jesus desiring the salvation of souls. Although a great athlete, he will one day become God's champion and martyr. Blessing the Holy Spirit Who led him from an early age, we exclaim:

Rejoice, keen student of the things of God!
Rejoice, deeply contemplating His mysteries!
Rejoice, heeding the call of the Lord!

Rejoice, pupil of the Spirit of God!
Rejoice, humble servant of the Father!
Rejoice, having put on the Lord Jesus Christ!

Rejoice, bearer of God in your body!
Rejoice, for you joyfully sing of His redemption!
Rejoice, for Christ the High Priest calls you to Himself!

Rejoice, Temple of the Holy Spirit!
Rejoice, ceaselessly invoking the Name of Jesus!
Rejoice, for all are inspired by you and praise God the Father Who is in heaven!

Rejoice, O Holy Father Theodore, New Hieromartyr of Christ and Defender of Orthodoxy!

Kontakion 3

Running to receive the light and easy yoke of Christ as His Priest, Father Theodore, you were raised to this dignity on the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord. Although eager to begin ministering to God's people and to help prepare others to become good priests, you were called, instead, to serve in the military in those turbulent times. Receiving this as a premonition of the future suffering our Church and the martyrdom you were called to as a true warrior of Christ, you sang: Alleluia!

Ikos 3

O Holy Father Theodore, your humility shone forth in your first priestly charge in a very poor parish. "I live here as a pauper and yet I feel happy and satisfied," you told your friend. Having laid aside all earthly cares, you became like the lilies of the field, and which one of these was arrayed as was your holy soul? Praising God for bestowing such grace on you, we sing:

Rejoice, poor in spirit, but rich in God!
Rejoice, having left everything to follow Christ!
Rejoice, for the mansions of Heaven await you!
Rejoice, for you share in Christ's Self-emptying!
Rejoice, for from the nothing you possess, God creates greatness!
Rejoice, for you join your sufferings to those of Christ on the Cross!

Rejoice, for the Spirit makes up for what you lack!
Rejoice, for you encourage the faith of those with whom you share your poverty!
Rejoice, for like the poor widow in the Temple, you have given more than most!

Rejoice, for Christ on the Altar is your chief Food!
Rejoice, for His Grace is your main covering!
Rejoice, for His love warms you and your flock in the coldness of this sinful world!

Rejoice, O Holy Father Theodore, New Hieromartyr of Christ and Defender of Orthodoxy!

Kontakion 4

You imitated the Master of all, Father Theodore, Who had nowhere to lay His Head. You were quickly taken from your parish to become a servant to the servants of God as director of their spiritual welfare and mentor at the seminary in Uzhorod. Your students praised your discipline and knowledge as their teacher, but saw in your kindness and love a witness to the Presence of the Lord Jesus in your heart. With them, we thank God for your dedication and sing: Alleluia!

Ikos 4

"No student is greater than his teacher," said He Who knows all things. We ask you for the privilege to be your students as well, learning from you the mysteries of God's love for mankind in the Incarnation of our Lord, God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Teach us to be faithful to Christ's Church and to witness to the Voice of the Saviour which is to be found within it, as we sing:

Rejoice, teacher of the hidden Kingdom within us!
Rejoice, partaker of the Mysteries of Christ!
Rejoice, contemplating the Word that comes from God!

Rejoice, conforming our minds to that of Christ!
Rejoice, teacher of obedience to His Church!
Rejoice, professor of the teachings of the Fathers!

Rejoice, imparting understanding of the mystical riches of the Eastern Church!
Rejoice, forming within us an enduring love for her Divine traditions!
Rejoice, pillar of the Orthodoxy of right faith and right worship!

Rejoice, revealer of the mysteries of the Church's liturgy!
Rejoice, leading us to the fount of holiness which is the Church!
Rejoice, bidding us to drink deeply of its sanctifying waters!

Rejoice, O Holy Father Theodore, New Hieromartyr of Christ and Defender of Orthodoxy!

Kontakion 5

Like Philip of old, you were taken suddenly by the Spirit to where you were needed most. With the approaching armies of the Godless Yoke, the Church called you to the dignity of Hierarch for our people at Mukachevo, to pray ceaselessly for them and to defend them against the attacks of the evil one. Thanking God for giving our Church a new protector in you, on earth and later in heaven, we sing: Alleluia!

Ikos 5

Cover us with your mantle of protection, Father Theodore, even as you invoked God's aid and assistance for your suffering Church that was surrounded by the gates of hell. Faithful to His promise in the Gospel, Christ did not allow them to prevail against it, with your prayers and mantle as a sure wall of defense against our foes, as we sing:

Rejoice, new Andrew of Scythia, invoking the Protective Mantle against the darts of evil!
Rejoice, new Elias, whose omophorion takes us to heaven in noetic chariots!
Rejoice, new Paul, bearing the Sword of the Spirit that vanquishes the enemy!

Rejoice, our hope before God in heaven!
Rejoice, ceaselessly praying for us in the midst of turbulent seas!
Rejoice, making up in your sufferings for what is lacking in the Body of Christ!

Rejoice, fearless shepherd, going out to meet the spiritual Goliath!
Rejoice, who bore the insults and curses of the godless giants!
Rejoice, who slew them with the sling of your humility and prayer!

Rejoice, protector of the pearl of great price, which is our Church!
Rejoice, for the waves of godlessness greatly troubled it!
Rejoice, for you showed yourself to be a steady helmsman!

Rejoice, O Holy Father Theodore, New Hieromartyr of Christ and Defender of Orthodoxy!

Kontakion 6

Like the Pharisees of old, the servants of the Godless Yoke tried to provoke you at every turn. As did the Apostles, you thought not what to say until you were taken to their courts for judgement. Repulsing every temptation to be unfaithful to Christ and His Church, your spirit fortified itself by constant prayer and praise of God's majesty, singing: Alleluia!

Ikos 6

"I would rather die than betray my Church!" the Holy Hieromartyr cried. You preferred, instead, to remain with Christ in His Agony in the garden. You refused to offer Him the kiss as Judas gave Him, but was ready to follow Christ Who was arrested and tried at night by sinners. Marveling at your courage and strength in the Spirit Who enlivens faith and blesses you with every gift on high, we sing:

Rejoice, for you stay with Christ in the Garden for many hours!
Rejoice, for, with Him, you accept the cup of suffering and martyrdom!
Rejoice, for you have become a ministering Angel to our Church in its agony!

Rejoice, for your soul is bedewed with the great drops of the Blood of Christ!
Rejoice, for God has counted all your tears shed for love of Him and our people!
Rejoice, for you willingly offer your life as one who has no greater love of our Church!

Rejoice, for the enemy is coming in the night to arrest you with staves!
Rejoice, for you will not give Christ the kiss of Judas!
Rejoice, for you are ready to go with Christ to the house of the New Caiaphas!

Rejoice, for you turn the other cheek from the blows the enemy gives you!
Rejoice, for the Martyrs in Heaven prepare a place for you!
Rejoice, you have loved us even as Christ has loved you!

Rejoice, O Holy Father Theodore, New Hieromartyr of Christ and Defender of Orthodoxy!

Kontakion 7

"They are taking from us our own priests and churches, but they will never be able to take away our faith from us," cried the Holy Hierarch Theodore. You persevered in severe struggles to visit the members of your flock entrusted to you by Christ. You stalwartly encouraged them not to give in to the temptations of the servants of the Godless Yoke and to endure suffering manfully for Christ's sake. Emboldened by your example, we humbly ask your prayers for a renewal of a similar zeal in our hearts grown cold by indifference, and sing: Alleluia!

Ikos 7

Steering the ship of our Church that was tossed and threatened by the waves of betrayal and persecution, O Father Theodore, you proved to be a great helmsman, guiding us with the rudder of your strong, unshakeable faith and loyalty to the Body of Christ. We praise your constancy as we recall your words of encouragement to your flock, singing:

Rejoice, for faith is truly our greatest treasure on earth!
Rejoice, for to preserve it we must even be ready to lay down our life for it!
Rejoice, for if we must die, let us die as true martyrs, defending our faith!

Rejoice, for with God's help we will never abandon our faith!
Rejoice, for we will never betray our Church!
Rejoice, for the weak in faith are made strong by your words and example!

Rejoice, for those who had left the Church in fear now fearlessly seek to return to it!
Rejoice, for our Church is founded on the firm rock of your faith!
Rejoice, for you have become another Peter, boldly confessing the Son of God as Lord!

Rejoice, for the blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians!
Rejoice, for many join with you in asking God for the grace of martyrdom for the faith!
Rejoice, for the love of God and His Church enflames the hearts of our people!

Rejoice, O Holy Father Theodore, New Hieromartyr of Christ and Defender of Orthodoxy!

Kontakion 8

You were a true son of the Mother of God of Mukachevo, O Holy Bishop Theodore! You constantly relied on her intercession and protection in your struggles with the Godless Yoke. Entrusting yourself and your flock to her mantle as to a fortified and walled city, you cried: Alleluia!

Ikos 8

"Most Holy Mother of God, save us!" the New Martyr and Hierarch cried day and night. Armed with the constant recitation of the Angelic Salutation, and with the icon of the miraculous Theotokos of Mukachevo, our God-loving Bishop is surrounded by impenetrable spiritual armor as he defends the Body of Christ. Thanking the Mother of God for the great graces bestowed on our Martyr through her intercession, we sing:

Rejoice, Mother of God of Mukachevo, Holy Protection of our people!
Rejoice, Mother of our crucified Church!
Rejoice, Helper and Protector of the despairing and lost!

Rejoice, who embraced our martyred bishops, priests and people, like your Son taken down from the Cross!
Rejoice, for your Son bids you not to weep for Him!
Rejoice, for the Lord Jesus affirms the resurrection of His Body in His Church!

Rejoice, you are the New Rachel who will not be comforted over the death of your children.
Rejoice, for you wail because they are not!
Rejoice, for you stand beneath the cross of our martyred Church!

Rejoice, you have blessed our land and people with the flowering buds of your miracles and miraculous icons!
Rejoice, for winter will soon be passed!
Rejoice, for the Divine Spring of victory is being heralded!

Rejoice, O Holy Father Theodore, New Hieromartyr of Christ and Defender of Orthodoxy!

Kontakion 9

"I tell you, Peter, that you are a Rock and upon this Rock I will build my Church!" proclaims the Saviour of all. "And whatever you will bind on earth, that will be bound in Heaven. And whatever you will loose on earth - that will be loosed in heaven!" Bowing before your steadfast love for Christ and the Church He founded beginning from the day of Pentecost, we praise you, Holy Theodore, and exclaim: Alleluia!

Ikos 9

"I confess One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church!" the fervent Hierarch Theodore proclaimed. Ready to sacrifice your life for the unity of His Church willed by Christ in the Gospels, you are inspired by the martyrdom of Peter and Paul in Old Rome at the hands of the God-hating emperor. We sing of your courage in opposing godless imperialism in our times and proclaim:

Rejoice, for you confirm all in the faith once-delivered by the Apostles!
Rejoice, for you defend it against the ruinous temptations of the evil one!
Rejoice, for you struggle to prevent the Church from being sifted like wheat by the devil!

Rejoice, for you fear not him who can only destroy the body!
Rejoice, for God protects you against the snares of him who has power to cast souls into hell!
Rejoice, for you tell the author of evil and his servants that God alone must be served!

Rejoice, for like Peter you are a symbol proclaiming the unity of all of God's Churches!
Rejoice, for like Paul you are a great pastor of your own Church!
Rejoice, Equal to the Apostles, who confirms the work of those who came before you!
Rejoice, iron thimble on which the scissors seeking to cut asunder God's seamless Robe that is the Church have dulled their edges!
Rejoice, great Wind that has, instead, rent in two the evil designs of the godless!
Rejoice, holy Rainbow witnessing to the enduring New Covenant of Christ and His Holy Church!

Kontakion 10

The godless authorities were afraid to destroy you in public, O Holy Theodore, and then plotted to take your life in secret, cowardly fashion. Attempting to murder you by ramming a military truck into your wagon by which you carried out your pastoral visits, they failed in their purpose however. Your hour had not yet come, and we sorrowfully remember your sufferings born for us and our Church and cry: Alleluia!

Ikos 10

You were taken to hospital in Mukachevo, badly suffering from your wounds sustained in the earlier attempt on your life, Holy Theodore. As you gained strength, the godless ones again feared greatly that you would become like another Samson, sustaining greater opposition to them having come close to death. You were then poisoned and your soul flew like the dove of Noah following stormy turbulence to heaven. Praising your heroic martyrdom endured for Christ and His Church, we bow down and sing:

Rejoice, New Martyr of the Godless Yoke!
Rejoice, Confessor of the Orthodox Faith!
Rejoice, Defender of the Catholic Church!

Rejoice, holy victim sacrificed to God!
Rejoice, for you loved the Lord, your strength, until the very end!
Rejoice, for you have kept faith with your Stronghold and Refuge!

Rejoice for you have tasted the sting of death!
Rejoice, for the victory of the Cross is yours at last!
Rejoice, for the Risen Christ frees you from His enemies!

Rejoice, for your death saddened all our people!
Rejoice, for they cried that their father was no more!
Rejoice, for you console us all with your intercession still!

Rejoice, O Holy Father Theodore, New Hieromartyr of Christ and Defender of Orthodoxy!

Kontakion 11

Having shared in the Passion of Christ and His Cross, you joined with our other Holy New Martyrs in praying for the Resurrection of our persecuted Church. God, Who orders all things wisely, called forth our Church from the Catacombs, as He called forth His Son, our Lord Jesus, from Egypt and at His Glorious Resurrection. Praising the Lord for His bountiful good-will toward us, we sing: Alleluia!

Ikos 11

Our Church has come forth from the tomb as the Lion of Judah, roaring in the wilderness, O Holy Theodore! Where sin abounded, grace now abounds even more abundantly! Our people rejoice in the miracle of this Resurrection and earnestly invoke you with the Choir of New Martyrs, thanking you ceaselessly for your enduring care and intercession for our Church and people. In gratitude, we sing:

Rejoice, our new intercessor in Heaven!
Rejoice, Holy Bishop, ceaselessly praying for your flock still!
Rejoice, Martyr of Christ, raising high the victorious standard of His Cross!

Rejoice, our spiritual guide who continues to nurture us in faith and love of God!
Rejoice, teacher of prayer!
Rejoice, our Guide in the Prayer of Jesus!

Rejoice, leading us to the well-springs of Grace in the Icons of the Mother of God!
Rejoice, bringing us to the renewed Churches of God to become partakers of Theosis through the Communion of the Body and Blood of Christ!
Rejoice, sender of the Joys of the Spirit!

Rejoice, for your prayers break through the walls of our hearts to bid us, "Peace!"
Rejoice, for we look to you as our example and heavenly protector!
Rejoice, for you cover us with your episcopal mantle under which all is well for us!

Rejoice, O Holy Father Theodore, New Hieromartyr of Christ and Defender of Orthodoxy!

Kontakion 12

You are like a new Moses, O Holy Father Theodore, for you lead your people through the desert of godless oppression, the dark night for all our souls. Your prayers make us worthy to receive the Heavenly Manna of Holy Communion in our Churches once again. And you strike the dried and hard rocks of our hearts by making them flow with the Grace of Divine Water that irrigates our parched souls. And we sing: Alleluia!

Ikos 12

Like Moses of old, you led us to the Promised Land of the Church of Christ after years of exile, O Holy Theodore. We ask you to continue to inspire us by your example and to protect us by your strong intercession before the throne of Almighty God, as we exclaim:

Rejoice, defeat of the new spiritual pharaoh!
Rejoice, whose episcopal staff drowned him as in another red sea of destruction!
Rejoice, conqueror of the wiles of the godless!

Rejoice, making fertile the once arid regions of our souls with the waters of the Grace of God!
Rejoice, inscribing the Commandments of our Lord on the tablets of our hearts!
Rejoice, gaining victory over the New Amalek by your arms uplifted in the form of a Cross in prayer!

Rejoice, sanctifying our souls with the Eternal Manna that came down from Heaven!
Rejoice, whose words of wisdom guide and inspire us still!
Rejoice, compassionate wonderworker, sending down spiritual and physical healing to all!

Rejoice, calling on us all to honour the Ark of the New Covenant, the Mother of God!
Rejoice, for our Risen Church beckons to us to come to it as to the Promised Land!
Rejoice, for our Church is full of the Divine Grace of spiritual Milk and Honey!

Rejoice, O Holy Father Theodore, New Hieromartyr of Christ and Defender of Orthodoxy!

Kontakion 13

Accept, O Holy Father Theodore, this little hymn of praise in your honour. We thank God Who so inspired you with His Grace to be so great a Pastor of His Flock, our Church, which you defended with your very blood. We ask you to continue to intercede for our Church, just as you did while you were our Bishop on earth. Renew in us a great faith in Christ and a deep love for Him and His Church. Guide us on our spiritual path through the Mysteries of the Church until we sing God's praises with you in the Kingdom of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, crying: Alleluia! (Kontakion 13 is repeated 3 times)

(Ikos 1 and Kontakion 1 are repeated here)

Prayer to the Holy Hieromartyr Theodore Romzha, Bishop of Mukachevo

O Holy Father Theodore, pray unto God for us in all our needs and extremities. Keep under your care the Church for which you shed your blood and bless all her Metropolitans, Bishops, Priests, Deacons, Monastics, and God-loving Orthodox Christians. Inspire us with a great zeal for the unity of Christ's One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Help us to be true to the Orthodox faith and traditions of our great spiritual patrimony. May we always consider it our true pearl of great price as it was bedewed and confirmed by your holy blood and that of the entire choir of holy New Martyrs. May we continue to go from strength to strength under your continual and enduring spiritual guidance and heavenly protection. Amen.

Dear Friends,

Forgive me, but I have one addition to make to the end of Kontakion 13:

Dear Father Don!

Thank you for your kindness!

I'm working on one to Our Lady of Lourdes - just something to do wink .

Someone has contacted me with respect to publishing a small collection, but that will take time and it's off in the future.

How are you doing, Father in Christ?

Alex the "New Romanos" wink , another absolutely beautiful job. You are truly a gifted and blessed melodist.

Perhaps someday you can think about composing some Kanons to some of these saints as well.

My Dear Friend Alex (the "New Romanos"),

Maybe we should also call you the "New Ephrem--
harp of the Holy Spirit!" God has truly given you a great gift! For the Latin Rite members of the Forum Family---who are still learning about the Eastern Church---and are not familiar with Theodore of Mukachevo---could you give us a short history?

Thank you, and may the Holy Spirit continue to inspire you!

Dear Fr. Deacon Michael,

Thank you for your kindness, but it is totally undeserved by me!

Blessed Theodore Romzha was the Ruthenian Bishop of Mukachevo who was martyred by the Soviets after World War II for his loyalty to the Catholic Church.

His parents were very poor, but very pious and Theodore followed his priestly vocation and studies.

He was drafted into the army during the war, but later continued his studies which he completed and was ordained. He was assigned to a poor parish which he served well and later became a professor at the seminary in Uzhorod.

When the soviets came, he stayed with his people, urging them to be loyal to their Church in communion with Rome, despite the violence of the Reds.

Even some Greek Catholic Churches that became Orthodox tried to return to communion with Rome under the inspiration of Theodore's witness.

They confiscated his car but he went about in a horse-drawn carriage. They then staged an accident by driving a military truck right into the carriage - but Theodore survived.

Later in hospital, two individuals were seen entering Theodore's room to poison him - and he was so poisoned.

Another Martyr who was poisoned was Bl. Basil Velichkovsky who was given a slow-acting poisonous injection just before he was freed from the USSR.

St Theodore was beatified by the Pope (in the Eastern Church, we don't have "Blesseds" but only "Saints" who are honoured locally, regionally, Church-wide and Universally) apart from the group of Ukrainian (and one Russian) New Martyrs.

In our Ukrainian Churches that have iconographic representations of our Bishop-Martyrs, St Theodore is always included and I grew up with a strong devotion to him. He is often mentioned in sermons and I've heard more about him from Ukrainian pulpits than most other Martyrs.

Dear Friends,

While I am a "Roman," I'm no "Romanos!" smile

Romanos had a lousy voice (perhaps there is a connection after all!), but could sing like a nightingale after, in a dream, the Mother of God appeared to him and gave him a musical note sheet to swallow.

I wonder what would happen to me if I chewed on some of the Administrator's published liturgical music sheets . . . smile

Somehow I don't think so!

Glory to God for all things!

Dear Alex, I love your akathist! Perhaps I can persuade my pastor to adopt for use in our parish? Do I have permission to post this akathist on the Hieromartyr Leonid website? As you know, Holy Bishop Martyr Feodor (Theodore) considered his post at the Mukachevo seminary to be temporary. He was trained as a missionary for the Russian Apostolate. He was surprised to be named as the new bishop.

I have always thought that he did serve the Russian Apostolate by his ministry and martyrdom in Capatho-Russia. Who knows how many Communist Russians will either have their faith restored as a result of his actions or how many Russian Orthodox Christians will also long for union with Rome.

Dear Paul,

Yes, absolutely, please use this akathist as you like!

You are also more than correct - St Theodore trained at the Russicum where, among other subjects, he studied Marxist-Leninist theory etc. in preparation for work in Russia.

I was at our parish of Sts Peter and Paul for the Old Calendar New Year's Levee last night.

That beautiful Church has an icon of the New Martyrs and, I am happy to say, St Theodore Romzha is front and centre among the martyred Bishops, ahead of others!

I also met the priest from whom I heard make mention of St Theodore many times in his sermons.

(As a matter of fact, he even looks a little like St Theodore Romzha, beard and all!).

Go ahead, Servant of God!

Alex
