Another thing that the K of C did, at least in the Johnstown,PA area, was ban Byzantine and Ukrainian Catholics teenagers from the CYO dances. According to the K of C, these "others" weren't Catholic.
I was a 3rd Degree until I overheard some "not so Christian" remarks by the Grand Knight of my Council concerning the Divine Liturgy our priest was having for the Council.
I'm thru....

Dear Knightly Friends,
As an aside, I was saddened to learn that Columbus was not going to be beatified in his jubilee year some time ago.
We went on a cruise that began in Genoa where there is a statue of Columbus and there was a display of some of the religious devotionals that WOULD have been copied for the public had Columbus have been beatified according to plan.
A number of groups were saying he brought slavery to the New World and so the beatification was put on indefinite hold.
I suppose the "nice" thing, if you can call it that, is that there is an Anti-Pope in Spain who was canonized "St Christopher Columbus."
But he has also canonized Francisco Franco too . . .
Alex

mark Dear Mark, Would you please be so kind as to provide some type of documentation or witness to this ban? When was it? In the 1940's? 1980's? Last year? I would really like to know so that I can show the information to a friend of mine who is interested in this type of thing. In Christ, anastasios

Dear Qathuliqa Mor Ephrem,
Yes, he is an interesting character . . .
Since you are a Catholicos yourself, have you thought of canonizing anyone lately?
If so, who would it be?
Alex

I've got an idea. Sine Knights of Columbus doesn't have an eastern traditional ring to it, why not change it to the Boyars of Colombus or maybe even the Kozaks of Columbus. For me it really doesn't make much of a difference, we don't have them down here in Brazil anyway. Lauro

Dear Alex, I don't ever think of canonising anyone, as I've got so much work to do making sure I get there (heaven) myself. If I even think of someone worthy of canonisation, I quickly realise that they probably don't need my help. Anyway, it might interest you that the Indian Orthodox Church will, this coming Sunday, canonise its first Catholicos, Vattasheril Mar Dionysios. He'll only be our Church's second saint (for some reason, canonisation never caught on with us as it did with other Churches, and I lament that fact, since we only have two official saints to show for twenty centuries of Christianity, and that is a pity). I don't know much about him, and what I've heard could go either way, and so I'm not sure what to think of this canonisation: it could be because he was a genuinely holy man (which I've heard, and heard to the contrary), but it could also well be a "propaganda move", given the ecclesiastical situation over there. I figured since you're into saints, if you hadn't heard it, you'd like that bit of news.

Dear Lauro,
As you know, there is a "Boyar Cross" that is quite beautiful and which the members of your new Order could wear!
I like to think that one reason why we Easterners never had Knightly Orders such as the K of C is that, unlike the West, our Bishops never felt the need to come into Church protected by men with swords . . .
But the "Knights of the Holy Sepulchre" are an Eastern order and they also accept Orthodox (not in communion with Rome) - the EP is a co-founder.
Interestingly enough, the Kozaks did see themselves as "Eastern Templars" and this is why their Kozak Cross is a Templar Cross - the same as those on the ships sailed by Columbus. Alex

Odo: As previously stated, the K of C is not a "secret" organization. The only thing "secret" is our rituals of membership during which the various degrees are conferred. And there is no blood oath to keep it a secret, just a promise. The K of C can be a good vehicle for brotherhood and charity (the four principles are charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism). I am also a member (hello Brother Dustin!) of the only Eastern K of C council (although I haven't been to a meeting as of yet there - just transferred last year). Of course the spirituality of the K of C in general will be Roman, because it was founded in the Roman church. Now if they could only learn to use that "second lung"..... Hope this helps. K of C is the Catholic answer to the GREAT heresy of Freemasory. Sadly, many Catholics are Masons. I only pray that the Bishops would start excommunicating those masons. Oh wait, those Bishops might be masons themselves... Oh well.
