well,
the 12 Great Feasts of the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic (Byzantine) Churches are:
The Great Feast of Feasts (Pascha) The Holy Nativity Pentecost The Protection of the Theotokos Dormition of the Theotokos Transfiguration of Our Lord Ascension of Our Lord The Elevation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross The Holy Theophany The Meeting of OUr Lord with Simeon The Entry of the Theotokos in the Temple Nativity of the Theotokos

Sorry Brian, The Holy Resurrection, the Feast of Feasts, is above the "12 great feasts." Also, the Protection of the Mother of God is not even observed by all the Byzantine Churches (notably, the Greeks do not have this feast), so it is not of the 12.
You missed:
Annunciation to the Mother of God Royal Entry of Our Lord into Jerusalem ("Palm Sunday")
The icons of these two, with the other ten, are properly placed on the festal row of the icon screen. Sometimes the Protection and Resurrection appear there, but they do not belong to the 12 great feasts.

Dear Lemko,
The Protection has become, for East Slavic Churches at least, part of the "Great Feasts" along with the twelve.
It is not as important in other Eastern Churches and it is not observed in the West, although Latin monasteries do portray the MOther of God extending Her Mantle over their founders and monks - the Carmelite Order is a good example and the scapular a symbol of that Protection. In a sense, the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is the West's feast of the Protection. (Right Fr. Elias?).
It was Bl. Mykola Askold's defeat at Constantinople when he saw the Patriarch dip the Protective Veil of the Mother of God into the sea that caused the tremors that destroyed much of his fleet that led the Prince to be baptised and then promote veneration of the Protection in Kyivan Rus'.
Later apparitions of the Mother of God at Pochaiv, Zarvanytsia, Terebovl, Barsk and others with Her Protective Mantle solidified the great veneration our peoples continue to have, especially the Kozaks, for the Protection.
But you are right, it is a characteristic of the East Slavic Churches.
Alex

Lorena,
They all have a biblical connection, even the non-canonical ones.
Where would this put the Protection of the Mother of God?
Pascha is the Feast of Feasts.
