From a purely philosophical standpoint, a "person" is an individuated nature. In this sense angels are, indeed, persons. They have an angelic nature and are individuals.

Dear Gordo,

I once knew a person who signed himself "Friar Gordo" on a Catholic list. He was also interested in things Eastern. However, he was in Texas. I wonder if, perhaps, you might be the same person?

Angels are pure spirits, guess they could constitute being a person.

Dear Friends,

And no one has yet postulated how many angels can fit on the head of a pin . . . wink

From a truly Eastern perspective, it is much more important to celebrate the Angels and imitate the angelic way of life - their carefree abandon to the Will of God, ready to be sent on missions as God wishes, and their constant praise of God the Holy Trinity.

It is only in this way that we may get a better understanding of the unknowable mystery of their being.

And what is it to us to know about "person" when we are meant to be prayerfully conscious of the role of angels in our lives, our Guardian angels, their existence all around us and by us, as well as the dangers constantly presented by the fallen demons.

St John Chrysostom wrote that during the Divine Liturgy the heavens are opened and many Angels descend to earth to stand around the Holy Altar.

May we all one day receive the Grace to experience this vision!

Alex

Father Deacon Ed -

No, sorry - it was not I. Interesting parallels, though. We're both Franciscans named Gordo and from the South. Perhaps he is my e-doppleganger!

But I certainly like the name -"Friar Gordo"! cool

Pace e' bene -

Friar Gordo, sfo wink
