Spacebo for that "revealing" tale. That subdeacon is my hero... biggrin

I will be spreading the tale of the heroic protosubdeacon to the servers this weekend. I heard something like this at Jordanville once years ago, but this is much more embellished and colorful. smile

Quote
Ironically, that is embroidered on the inside of the sakkos. This isn't well known, though, since it is usually in Greek or Slavonic.
And you have to have the right instructions for the right model and make, also. smile Folding the omophorion...velikij omophor instructions don't work on a malij omophor... wink

Reminds me of another story about a bishop, a trikery, and tongues of fire...

Glory to Jesus Christ!

On Sunday, we had so many people in our Byzantine temple for Divine Liturgy that there was literally nowhere to stand or sit.

The rest of our pews really need to go now.

It's prostration time anyway.

I agree that there disadvantages to seating...but there are advantages too. Seating (and pews are an efficient form of seating) is proper for sitting and listening to a sermon and/or advice from someone educated. My favorite part of a service is listening to the priest's interpetation of scripture. I would prefer worship outside though. (weather permitting)In fact worship outside is better as there are no obstructions to worship at all.

Pews are undeniably a form of seating (what else would one do with them?). But there is nothing efficient about them. I suggest easily movable but comfortable and dignified chairs - there's quite a variety on the market - combined with good carpeting of an easily-cleaned variety to cut down on the noise.

Christ is Risen!!

ok - I'm blurbling out here before reading every post... but here goes...

Yes I absolutely agree standing is a very attentive posture - as sitting is a very passive posture [or normally taken so - as we really shouldn't judge others capabilities compared to our own]....

Hmmm.... if your church has pews... those who wish to stand should just brave up to it and stand during the entire Divine Liturgy, and as a matter of fact any other Liturgical services that in their hearts they recognise as needing every fiber of their being to be attentive and not passive.

again...Standing is a very attentive posture - as sitting is a very passive posture....

Didn't St. Paul go down stairs and FETCH & FIX a parishoner who fell to his demise while SITTING on the window ledge during Liturgy... sewwwww look what happened there... in the end he was 'woken' up and continued to listen to St. Pauls homily - - - inspite of sitting. :p WOW!! God's mercy.

I also seem to remember someone telling me about the Little Flower [St. Terese] snoozing at adoration [while sitting], and in answer to her prayerful pleadings of forgivness for sleeping during 'her watch'... He replied lovingly that all was ok as He was with her still, and cradled her while she slept. smile

toodles & God bless, sUSAn

Slava Isusu Christu!

When I was in the OCA, in Alaska, we would sit on the hard wood floor, some would get a piece of the persian rug in the center to sit on, during the sermon smile

Oh, the good ole' days...but as I've gotten older, and now back in the most holy Rusyn Church, pews aren't so bad, specially for my tired bones.

In the Mother of the Light,

Robert

One may be seated when necessary, certainly. If one's age or state of health make that necessity a likely occurrence, it is well to bring along a folding chair or even a wheel chair.
