Following the suggestion of a wise Sub-deacon in Middle America, I decided to open a thread for discussing the Book of Needs - Требник - Ευχολογιον (Trebnyk - Evchologion). I originally thought of starting a thread call "The Library", covering all the books needed for services, but considering how many there are, it could all get a bit confusing (not unlike preparing for Matins?  ) I've never seen the previously-mentioned Basilian Trebnyk (in any language), even though our parish has been run by Basilians for over a year now. I know we have Patriarch Josyf's Trebnyk, and that's all I've seen the four plus years I've been at this church. Same as in my previous parish. I tried to find a copy of this Trebnyk, but with no success. Instead I picked up the 'latest' Trebnyk, published by Svichado www.svichado.lviv.ua [ svichado.lviv.ua] , the Studite publishing house in Lviv 2001 (ISBN 966-561-211-5). This is a "small" Trebnyk, that is, it doesn't contain *all* the services and blessing (such as for new church bells). It has the following short intro (all errors are my own): В основу Требника, що його пропонуємо для щоденного вжитку духовенству Української Греко-Католицької Церкви, покладено Малий Требник римського видання 1973 р., тексти якого переклала міжєпархіяьна літургічна комісія під проводом Блаженнішого Патріярха Йосифа. До римського видання додано деякі чини і молитви, які часто використовуються у щоденному душпастирстві. Їх узято із Требника, виданого у Львові 1925 року із благословення Слуги Божого Митрополита Андрея. Ці тексти є новими перекладами і ще остаточно не потверджені. Отож, це видання тимчасове.
Нашим бажанням є видати українською мовою повний Требник, на основі Требника 1925 року. Майбутнє видання, потверджене Главою та Синодом Єпископів Української Греко-Католицької Церкви, стане офіційним для усієї нашої Церкви.

My feeble translation:
This Book of Needs, which we offer for daily use by the clergy of the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church, is based on the Small Book of Needs published in Rome in 1973, translated by a inter-eparchial liturgical commission under the leadership of His Beatitude Patriarch Josyf. To this publication we have added a few rites and prayers which are often used by pastors. They are taken from the Book of Needs, published in L'viv in 1925 with the blessing of the Servant of God Metropolitan Andrei. These texts are a new translation and have not, as yet, been ratified. Therefore this publication is temporary.
Our desire is to publish the complete Book of Needs, in Ukrainian, based on the 1925 Book of Needs. This future publication, ratified by the Head and Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church, will become official for our entire Church.

19 February 2001 A.D. This is the only proper Trebnyk I own at the moment. In addition I do have various elements from the Trebnyk in other books and publications, such as Прийдіте поклонімся - Pryidite poklonimsia, and even type-written, photocopied booklets. One of my next purchases in Kyiv will be a Trebnyk published by the UOC-KP in Ukrainian. As it wasn't on my 'shopping list' back in August I, unfortunately, didn't take note if there was a single volume, Small Trebnyk, or a multi-volume Mega Evchologion. I'll be writing to a contact in Kyiv soon with my next shopping list - I'll ask for confirmation. What experience have you had with Books of Needs? Does anyone have a copy of the 1925 L'viv Trebnyk? I'd love to get my hands on one, if only a photocopy. Andrij (vostochnyk and bibliophile) BTW, I have just learned (the hard way) that one cannot post Cyrillic or Greek words in the subject line of a thread.

Er, I can type them but when I post it's converted to ?s, e.g., trebnyk = ??????? Same thing happens when I type Czech/Slovak characters--they turn into ?s.

Same thing happens when I type Czech/Slovak characters--they turn into ?s. He-he. Second post and already off topic!  Are you using a PC or Mac? (not sure if this will make a difference, but it might). I'll I do is hit Alt+Shift (my chosen hot keys) to switch 'keyboards' to Ukrainian then type, and I get ей ріл алфабет! Maybe our esteemed Administrator or some computer guru can sort you out. Andrij

Are you using a PC or Mac? (not sure if this will make a difference, but it might).[/b]PC-- Windows XP, IE 6.0, ParaWin at the office and a public domain keyboard switcher (Russian phonetic) at home. Same results at work & at home -- it appears fine until I click "Add Reply" or "Preview Post". Then what looked fine turns into ?s.

Andrij, the Basilian Trebnik is the Wysochansky Euchologion. You can get it from Basilian Press in Toronto amongst other sources, even Icon and Book Service in D.C. had a few copies at one time. I'm sure if you mention it to Kyr Pavlo he will know exactly what you are talking about. I like the one-volume approach for an English text, as the Wysochansky is very handy in that regard. So we'd better get cracking on that English translation (after we see the KP Trebnik, of course...  ) I think overall the Studite Trebnik is very faithful to Metropolitan Sheptytsky's Slavonic of 1925, which is in turn much more faithful to the Mohylian and other pre-Zamosc versions.

This is the only online store, that I am aware of besides Holoviaks, where we can get "our" Eastern Catholic stuff so-to-speak. I know Light-N-Life has BDW and a couple items, but nothing near St. Joseph School for Boys Bookstore. It is truly a blessing and they can to overnight shipping!

Icon and Book Service, www.iconbook.org [ iconbook.org] is another place to check. They are an outreach of the Holy Cross Monastery (Ukrainian Catholic). You often have to call Elaine and make sure she has something in stock. She is very good about shipping quickly and will backorder if need be. She was able to locate some SVS Press stuff that was out of print for me once.
