I was rather disturbed when the closing hymn at last week's Divine Liturgy was that ever-popular "let's all pretend we're God" hymn, "Be Not Afraid" ...

Please -- someone -- tell me this was an aberration! This particular hymn is my own personal "It's a Small World", if you get my drift ... wink

Friends,

"Be not afraid" was sung in a BC parish in Pittsburgh I attended. I have also heard "On Eagles' Wings" at a BC funeral (no doubt for the refrain "And I will rais you up on the last day IIRC).

Oh dear frown

And neither of 'em are favourites of mine in any case.

I do have a friend who is so incensed at their use that he shuts his hymn book and refuses to sing them. He is also an Orgainst and will not play them either wink

That is one downside to a completely "modernized" and "Americanized" parish, complete with all of the sap that goes along with the popular modern culture. Bad music completely outside of the tradition. Even if not in Slavonic there are decent hymns set to English in Greek Catholic and Orthodox hymnals.

The Ukies would likely strangle someone who tried to lead a hymn like that before the first line was out of his mouth...

Calgon, take me away...

Hey KL, next time I come to visit V&O why don't you and I do a two-part harmony version of "Peace is flowing like a river" to start the 9:30 Sunday Sluzhba Bozha? biggrin (Death wish) biggrin

If those people in W. Pa. would only open up their Byzantine funeral books! Such sappy music must go well with their Latin Tridentine High Mass interior. Where art thou, protopresbyter?!?

During my four years at a Latin seminary, they kept singing, "Sing a New Song unto the Lord ..." So, one day I turned to the 'music ministers' and asked when that was going to happen. I only got stares.

Dear Cantor Joe,
Love your comment to the music ministers -- priceless! -
Theist Gal,
My sympathies. Sometimes 'music' can truly be a penance which must be endured. And offered up of course.

With all these OCP song titles floating around, you're all bringing back the only horrible memory I have of my Catholic elementary school education, music class!

I might have to go the ROCOR parish to detox myself wink

Just got to say this...

I think the use of popular modern hymns from another ritual Church in a Byzantine Church is wrong. What we need to do is restore our tradition and celebrate it fully...not edit and adapt from another tradition.

But, I happen to like some of the modern Roman hymns such as "Be Not Afraid" or "On Eagle's Wings." I also like Coptic chant (including the cymbals). One of my favorite CDs is John Michael Talbot's Table of Plenty. Of course, some of my other favorites are Rachmanioff's Divine Liturgy by the Corydon Singers and To You Father Nicholas by the Schola Cantorum of St Peter's directed by our own Professor Michael Thompson (in Ukrainian).

BTW, I also like Gregorian chant. I'm not denying that there are problems that the Roman Rite is wrestling with as they go through their `reform of the renewal.' Hymn singing is a tradition of the Western Church and I think a range from traditional to modern in the Western Church is not necessarily a bad thing.

Well, I don't mind so much hearing these songs performed, as that's how they were originally intended. I can listen to Robert & Robin Kochis (a Catholic singing duo) warble "Be Not Afraid" and "On Eagle's Wings" and it doesn't bother me a bit.

However, these songs are NOT good for congregational singing. There's a wonderful, wonderful book which I brought in with me today to reread, called "Why Catholics Can't Sing," by Thomas Day. He's focusing primarily on Latin Rite Catholics, and his concern is that in too many R.C. churches, the people in the pews have just lost interest in singing because of songs like this one. (It's a very funny book - you'll enjoy it no matter what rite you are!)
