Wednesday, May 26, 2004 LOS ANGELES The American Civil Liberties Union (search) plans to sue Los Angeles County if it does not remove a cross from its official seal. County officials say the cross represents the Spanish missions (search), which are part of California's history.
They add that it would be expensive to redesign the county seal, which was designed in 1957 and appears on most official county property: walls, documents, water bottles, uniforms, cars and trucks.
On Friday, the ACLU gave the county two weeks to eliminate the seal.
"What is the message that it sends?" said Ramona Ripson of the ACLU. "What that message is to everyone in California is one of Christianity, and we are a state of diverse people."

They keep pecking away ...

Dear Cantor Joe,
If they reacted this way to Los Angeles' seal, I wonder what they have tried in Maryland where there are two crosses on the state flag and another cross mounted at the top of the pole as a finule?
I get discouraged sometimes, but remember the psalmist and smile; I will sing praises to my God as long as I have life.
In Christ, Cantor Andrew

Hey, I'm ready to get flamed.
This particular action is a stupid waste of time and money, but the ACLU has been on the right side of a lot of other issues.

I,m sorry, Cizinec, but I can find little positive to say about the ACLU. When Michael Savage called the ACLU "VERMIN" on his radio program, I was appalled at first. Then when I realised that they defend such an organisation as NAMBLA(a pedophile organisation), I said,'"Right on!"orry, but these types wail about "seperation of Church and state", but seem to give Moslems a pass all the time.

What next? Will they sue to change the names of the various California cities which were founded around the various Franciscan missions? To name a few, there are San Francisco (St Francis), San Luis Obispo (St. Louis, the bishop), San Juan Capistrano (St John Capistran), Santa Clara (St Clare). Even the original name of Los Angeles is "El Pueblo de la Reyna de los Angeles", the town of the Queen of the Angels.

For the most part I'm in agreement with everyone... that this whole cross thing is a big waste of time, money, and effort. It does smack of Christian bashing. I did want to point out, however, that although the L.A./cross/ACLU story is legit, there are many "now look what they (ACLU) are up to" stories spread via the Internet that just aren't true. I receive many similar types of "the bad guys are after us" e-mails. So, before I get upset or begin e-mailing my outrage to everyone and his brother, I check out the website www.snopes.com. [ snopes.com.] which is an urban legend resoure page. There is also another site www.urbanlegends.com. [ urbanlegends.com.] And finally, as I did with the above story, I went into Google News and typed "ACLU" "cross" "Los Angeles" and lo and behold up came a number of article from respectable, albeit secular, news sources.

Dear Friends,
More ACLU "stupid is as stupid does."
The Bernalillo County (Albuquerque) emblem included a cross.
The ACLU objected to a religious symbol on a government emblem. I don't remember if the matter went to court or settled out of court. Regardless, the cross was removed from the emblem and replaced it with the Zia symbol (on our state flag, license plates, etc).
see http://www.nmsu.edu/~bho/zia.html
Guess what? The Zia symbol is a religous symbol of the Indians of Zia Pueblo.
Go figure.
Paul

I must say that I am okay with their fight against forms of surveillance and forcing the government to follow the US Constitution regarding illegal searches. They've also taken up fights for groups that needed and deserved the help. Sometimes the Catholic Church and the ACLU are filing similar amicus briefs. I'm just looking forward to the day when they oppose national gun registration and support 2nd ammendment protections. I don't like everything they do, but SOMEBODY here has to stick up for them. Right?

Cizinec,
I happen to agree. Oftentimes the ACLU does pursue stuff that appears pretty idiotic, but at other times, they have fought for the rights of the oppressed against the mighty.
Most of the time I don't agree with 'em, but I am supportive of their agenda to protect civil liberties - especially in the age of the USA Patriot Act, secret wiretaps, and indefinite imprisonment of US citizens and others without charge or access to attorneys.
Cheers,
Sharon

Wasn't the Santa Maria de Conceptione River renamed Mississippi River? A number of towns in Central PA were having their names challenged because they were named after fellas who were Catholic missionaries. Is anyone aware whether the ACLU will export itself to challenge the public use of religion in countries under Islamic Law? Just wondering. Joe
