I would agree with the Rev. Fr. Deacon's assessment of the distinction between the SSPX and the Orthodox.

The Orthodox would regard both the Novus Ordo and the Tridentine liturgy in the same way, owing to its theology of union with the Church as the fountain of grace etc.

There is no longer any excommunication between Rome and Orthodoxy, as far as Rome is concerned anyway.

Again, Rome has ALWAYS recognized the Orthodox Church as the True Church, although formerly in rebellion. What the Orthodox Church holds by way of Apostolic faith today, Rome once held in agreement with it as well. Rome has no need to convert to Orthodoxy, but to arrive at an agreement of union with it. They are already very close.

The SSPX, on the other hand, has stated categorically that what the RC Church once was, it is no longer because of the Novus Ordo and Vatican II. When has the Orthodox Church ever said anything of the kind?

And if I were a Roman Catholic, I would find what the SSPX has said as categorically heretical. Did not Christ promise to be with His Church until the end of time?

Again, one may have valid sacraments whose celebration could be (and in this case are) a celebration of schism and heresy.

Which doesn't mean, of course, that the SSPX can't come back to the Church.

Alex

Good points. I agree. Please know that my questions are always asked with Charity and a desire to learn. You have made good and valid points that perhaps I had not considered. I shall think about this.

Thank you [Linked Image]

Dear Columcille,

No problem, Big Guy, you always DO make excellent points in the spirit of charity.

I wish that all Orthodox were like you. Oops! I meant to say "Catholics." [Linked Image]
