According to the prophecies of St Malachy, the next pope will be Gloria Olivae, or the glory of the Olive. Any ideas as who this could be?
I was in Poland in 1978, when John Paul passed away and was at a prayer meeting, after which I asked a friend as who she thought would be electec the next Pope? She looked me streight in the eye and said "Tadziu, everyone knows who the next pope is going to be,." I asked,"Who is it?" She said," The next pope is going to be Karol Wojtila. He is the Laborer of the Sun." This was five days before his election.

If the next Pope has to be "gloria olivae," then is he from the Benedictine Order, specifically, an Olivetan?

OK, Which of the cardinals either was a Benedictine monk or has a connection with the Benedictine order ? This also coinsides with the Benedictine tradtion that there will be a pope from their order!! Sorry to be so ignorant, but what is an Olivetan?

Or, it could refer to Gethsemane, at the "Garden of Olives," a biblical Jewish land, where Our Lord, Jesus Christ, suffered his agony? Agony-->Glory? A Jewish Pope? A redemption of the Jews? Then, Cardinal Lustiger, Archbishop of Paris, is it, he being a convert from Judaism!  Amado

An "Olivetan" is a priest/monk of a branch of the Benedictine Order.

Another Cardinal who has a "connection" with the descriptor "gloria olivae" is Cardinal Policarpio, the Patriarch of Lisbon. Cardinal Policarpo was a former rector of the seminary at "Olivais" where he also studied as a seminarian. Read his short bio here [ catholicnews.com]

Of course if St. Malachy is to be believed on this, it may mean someone will be elected who knows Olive Oyl.

I have a question is a Cistercian Order part of the Bendictine family?
If so, then I propose that the next pope will be Arinze from Nigeria. He was ordained by St Micheal Mansi, who was a Cistersian monk.

Yes, the Cistercian Order follows strictly the Rule of St Benedict!
Cardinal Arinze would likewise be an excellent papal choice!

Yes, the 2 Cistercian Orders belong to the Benedictine family: Cistercians of Common Observance (O. Cist.) and Cistercians of Strict Observance (O.C.S.O.), otherwise known as the "Trappists."

Further guesstimates? It's really anyone's guess, isn't it? I don't know if there is any validity to the prophecies of St. Malachy. I would like to see the next pope pay a little more attention to the administration of the church. Not that there was anything wrong with JPIIs outreach to the world, which he did extremely well. But that's not the only approach, and maybe someone with a bit of managerial skill would be a good thing.

Alexander Romanus Alex, you (and others) may enjoy a novel I just finished re-reading, called "The Red Hat," by Ralph McInerny. (In case you don't recognize his name, he's (a) the author of several mysteries featuring "Father Dowling", and (b) the editor of the journal "Crisis".) Anyway, this novel, written in 1998, takes place just before and shortly after the death of the Pope John Paul II (at the age of 84 - interesting coincidence, eh?). I won't tell you all the details because it's really an enjoyable novel but among other things, the newly elected Pope takes the name "John Paul III". (But he's not from Brazil. )
