This is a question off of topic but I wanted to ask it in all seriousness. For Peter and Anastasios: If you are both Byzantine Catholics, did you ever consider going to Holy Spirit Seminary in Ottawa, Canada and to study at the Sheptytsky Institute? The goal of the Institute is to provide a complete Eastern Theology faculty, although they are admittedly short on non-byzantine eastern Christian traditions. It is A very "Eastern" formation, and is Catholic. I was just wondering. Maybe it is too far awa, or cold. ALity

ALity,
One of the downsides of having your Bishop's blessing is he gets to choose where you go to seminary. I was told that I would be attending St. Gregory's Seminary here in Boston. For me that was not to bad as my family lives here, and I have already done a year here. The other reason is that there is a mission of the Eparchy here that can use the help. So, for me, it seems like a logical fit.

The idea of a vocational discernment retreat is a great thing---they should be happening all over the country in my opinion. But aren't there a number of those happening every year at the Byzantine Catholic Seminary? I've seen ads for a "Come and See" experience.

Peter,
That is true. I forgot about the Bishop Factor. I was allowed the choice. I chose Ottawa because of it's markedly "eastern" formation, and for that it deserves much attention.
I never told you before, but the seminary has a Romainian Greek Catholic mission which uses the chapel there every Sunday. I checke it out for a little while when I visited the seminary this winter. It was very beautiful.

Dear Friends,
When I applied to the seminary, I was only asked to provide my Bishop's name and address.
I of course discussed this over with my Bishop, but he never gave me a "blessing."
Is this a formal assent on the part of one's bishop or an actual blessing intended to express such consent?
I guess I'm more Latinized than I thought . . .

Alex,
It is a formal assent. A letter indicating that the bishop accepts you as a seminarian for his eparchy.

Peter wrote: Greetings, I am interested in starting a forum for those of us who are seminarians or seminary teachers or those studying for some ministry in the Byzantine church. I envision this set up the same way as the deacons forum. The Administrator tells me if I can find 3 or 4 interested people we can get it going. Let me know if you would be interested. Peter, can you please check your private messages? If there are at least two or three individuals who qualify as seminarians we can start this forum. Admin

wow! God realy makes wonder. i never expect that the "new forum" are for seminarians of eastern traditions. i'm posted some question of mine in the formation forum about canonical transfer and getting in touch with eastern traditions in this side of the world.
about the discussion on having a bishop to back you up upon entering a seminary, fortunately about two years ago one of the auxilliary bishop of the archdiocese of manila (Latin) was installed to be our pastor and because our youth charismatic group is so prominent with the parish outreach missions. i got the chance of becoming intouch with my bishop and have discussed to him my calling. he said that its up to when to answer that call he'll be ready to give me his blessing to enter the seminary.
but the thing is i'm so drawn to the spituality of the eastern catholic tradition. and entering a seminary here would make things shaky
thanks for listening.... God bless... eumir bautista
