Glory to Jesus Christ!

I've been Googling unsuccessfully for the Jesus Pryaer in Church Slavonic, preferably in a more Slovakian transliteration (versus Russian).

Can anyone help with this? I've gotten so much out of singing Marian hymns in Slavonic, and now I'd like to try doing my chotki in Slavonic too.

Proper pronunciation would be helpful too...
Dear Friends,

In Slavonic, this is how the Jesus Prayer is said:

Hohs/pohdy Eesoo/-seh Khrys-teh/

Sih/neh Boh/zhiy

poh-mih/-lui (looy) meh-neh/

hreesh/nah-ho

The syllable to the LEFT of the side slash is where the accent, when pronouncing the word, should be.

Check the Old Orthodox Prayer Book, 2nd edition (Erie 2001), p. 9.

And for heaven's sake, learn the alphabet!

If this slitty-eyed, yellow-faced chink can do it, so can you!

OC,
Thank you for the guide to pronounce the Jesus prayer in Slavonic.

My Orthodox Pastor friend in Bayonne, Father Alexander, asked all his congregation to say this prayer along with the Our Father and Hail Mary before retiring for the evening.

I didn't know of the Jesus prayer because our EC parish is very western IMO. So I looked it up on the Internet. I am never going to get the Cryellic (spelling?), so that's why I am especially thanking you.

Jim
Dear John,

Many of our Ukies have trouble with Ukrainian, let alone Slavonic!

You are welcome!

And don't pay attention to Incognitus!

He seems to prefer Latin above all . . . wink

I have scanned a very nicely typeset Church Slavonic Cyrillic version of the Jesus prayer. This is from the back of an Icon I received as a gift, Im not sure of the source. The top portion is the Jesus prayer the bottom the invocation to the Godbearer.

I have assembled this into a two-page PDF file. Page one is the scan of the prayers, page two a pronunciation guide. The pronunciation guide is one following the Rusyn traditional method. This is the guide I was given when learning Church Slavonic at the seminary in the early eighties.

Using the transliteration scheme of our current publications the prayers are:

Hospodi Isuse Christe, Syne Bozii, pomiluj mja hrisnaho.

Presvjataja Bohorodice spasi nas.

My apologies for the size of the file, around eight megs. The type is a very nice script and I did not want to lose too much of the detail. You can zoom way in on this. I recommend a right-click and download the file rather than open in the browser. Download Jesus Prayer PDF [puluka.com]

Im also compiling a study guide for learning Church Slavonic. Sort of a tour of the resources available for English speakers. An annotated bibliography of grammars, lexica, reading material and language studies. Ill post a link when that is complete too.

Thanks Steve!

The font looks like one used by Sofrino.

This is great stuff -- thanks to Alex, Steve and all who have answered my original question. Seems to me there could be no better way to begin learning the alphabet in earnest than to use the Jesus Prayer.

I'm finding that praying my chotki in Slavonic helps me to concentrate on the Prayer. It's too easy to just rattle it off in English with inattention and wandering mind.

I have to concentrate on each word, especially at this early stage, focusing not only on pronunciation but the meaning of each the word. There is tremendous weight to each word of the Prayer. Praying it in Slavonic is helps me heft each of those words in my heart.

I know this is an old thread but here it goes...

Does anyone know where to find an audio recording of the Jesus Prayer spoken clearly in Old Church Slavonic. Any format is fine youtube, DVD, CD, MP3 whatever.
I need to hear it to learn it.

Thanks!

What do tou mean a "Slovakian" transliteration vs. "Russian"? Do you mean a rendering in Latin alphabet characters (Latinka) vs. Cyrillic script characters?

Mysteries of the Jesus Prayer [mysteriesofthejesusprayer.com]
Check out this site. They have a new book and DVD out on the Jesus Prayer which I found informative.

I tried buying the mysteries of the Jesus prayer on their site. Wouldnt let me buy it. Kept jumping around to saying it wont deliver to Ireland and only within the states. Even though they do allow you to purchase it from anywhere in the world. Best I could find was their book on Amazon.co.uk.

Church Slavonic: Господи Ісусе Христе Сыне Божїй помилѹй мѧ грѣшнаго. (грѣшнѹю if prayed by a female)

It is pronounced Gospodee Eesoosee Kristi si - neh boji pomelui me hreesh nah ho
