Knights Templar to Vatican: Give us back our assets [theregister.co.uk]
Quote
The Daily Telegraph reports that The Association of the Sovereign Order of the Temple of Christ has launched a court case in Spain, demanding Pope Benedict “recognise” the seizure of assets worth €100bn. The Spanish-based group of Templars apparently says in a statement: "We are not trying to cause the economic collapse of the Roman Catholic Church, but to illustrate to the court the magnitude of the plot against our Order." This might come as a surprise to those who believe that the order of warrior monks – also credited with possessing the Holy Grail and laying the foundation of the European banking system - was smashed in 1307 by Pope Clement V and Philip IV of France.

At the time, the order was accused of a multitude of crimes, including two medieval biggies - sodomy and heresy.

However, recently discovered Vatican papers showed that the order had never been declared heretics, burnings at the stake for the leadership not withstanding.

Rather, it appeared that the order’s suppression was more a piece of realpolitik on the pope’s part to pacify Philip, who was somewhat irked by the prospect of the powerful order increasing its continental activities after Jerusalem fell to the Turks.

Despite the order’s brutal apparent suppression, its legacy has been claimed by numerous successor organisations, and besmirched by popular authors ad nauseum.

LOL! Too funny...

And perhaps, following the successful outcome of this lawsuit, the Orthodox should sue the Knights Templar in European Courts to retrieve all of the treasures absconded during their adventures in the Middle East?

I would also add a good measure for pain and suffering...

I was just informed from by my cousins in Transcarpathia that the Knights Templar used the small castle at Seredne(Uzh County) as a secret hideout. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to visit the remains of the Seredne Zamok. I did manage to visit Rakoczy Zamok in Mukachevo. These Medieval Castles in Eastern Europe are very interestings are often used as museums.

There are loads of nut groups claiming to be the Knights Templar. None of them, of course, can prove the claim - and certainly not to the satisfaction of any civil court.

I assume this is nothing more than another leg-pull.

O. Serhe,

Ah, yes! Something to sell to unsuspecting American tourists like myself! grin

Shouldn't the Knights Tepler, if they are truly successors to the order, actually be suing France? Was it not the French King who wass responcible for their plight? Would not the French successor state thus be more liable than the present Catholic Church?

If I where them, I'd be saying, Get out your wallet, Sarkozy.
Слава Ісусу Христу!
After celebrating the 1020th anniversary of the Christendom of Rus’ President Viktor Yushchenko of Ukraine could sue the Russian state for the sack of Kyiv next year. 2009 will be the 840th anniversary of the 1169 sacking, and the 806th of the 1203 rape of Kyiv. The latter can become a class action suit with the Patriarch of Constantinople as the precursor for showing the Venetians in sacking Byzantium that Eastern brotherhood was just talk and would not safeguard the pension-off of the old Dames by the want-a-be bullies of might is right.
Well I for one would be in agreement with this, on the following conditions, all the European nations and governments around the world, would have to either give back all the properties and assets seized from the Catholic Church, or make just compensations!
Stephanos I
Hmmmm let's see that would be somewhere around a trillion trillon dollars.

Слава Ісусу Христу!
Father bless…

Naturally, “all the European nations and governments” would have to include the Vatican State and all the holding it lost all over the world. Speaking of, ever wonder why the Vatican never sends a team to the Olympics? Anyone paying Peter’s Pence should be eligible to compete. Has anyone figured out the Vatican’s diaspora figures?
Why not let the Vatican sue Italy for seizing ROme and the Papal States? Then they'd have the Cash to pay off the Templars.

While we're at it, why not let the Vatican sue England and get bakc Canterbury and several other Churches...

the list can be endless...
Слава Ісусу Христу!
If they can get back Canterbury, Westminster, Southminster, Eastminster and Northminster maybe they can halt inclusive clerics.
Are any of you posting to this thread lawyers or studying to be lawyers or have lawyers in your families?

I'm sitting here ROFLOL at all this. It reminds me of the guy who is always on TV saying, "There's no fee unless we get money for YOU!"

The only ones who'd make out on any of these suits would be the attorneys. In fact, the collection of potential suits here could be the retirement fund for a big crowd of these ladies and gentlemen. In the meantime, all the litigants would move on as they have already, wishing a pox on the houses of all the lawyers.

I don't think anythign will come of it, and thought it obvious what my acutal sentiment was.

Do please tell us your acutal sentiments!

Fr. Serge
Sounds good to me!

My actual sentiment is that the lawsuit from the alledged Knights templer is foolish nonsence.

They cannot prove they are genuine successors to the order, and even i they could, this sort of historical lawdsuit wrangling would, if permited, open the legal precendet for other suits, if fair.

Why couldn't the United Kingdom sue the United STates for the loss of its Empire and Internaitonal Prestige by accepting the Americn proposal that integrated Brittain to Europe? Why not let The Vatican Sue for possessin of the City of Rome, which Italy stole form it in 1870? Why not allow the Vatican, then Rome, to sue the United Kigndom for loss of its assets in the reign of Henry the 8th?

While we're at it, the Byzantine Empirial Successor, the Patriarch of OCnstantinopoe, can sue the Vatican for the Crusars sack of COnstantinopole whch lead ot its defeat, but the Vatican need not worry, it coudl pay its reparations out of the money it gaisn after suing the German Govenrment for tis invovlement in stripping the Churhc of its assets at the tiem fo he Reformation.

It'd jst be an endless quagmire.
