A quick note for those of the Eastern Rite who are truly interested...there were 62 amendments attached to the approval of the texts but they have not been released...yet.

I am sure that brother Shawn Tribe(thenewliturgicalmovementblogspot) will keep all who are interested updated...

The amendments are subject to a line-item veto by the Holy See and the Vox Clara Committee, so we still don't know what the final text will be like, but it will likely include much fewer of the amendments proposed by the U.S. Bishops, and perhaps even a few changes by the Holy See.\

It'll be interesting to see how quickly things move along, and how quickly the new translation will reach the parish level. Bishop Trautperson said "at least two years," while others are hoping we could see it even by Advent. My uneducated guess would be somewhere around a year from now.

Thank goodness that God-awful "And also with you" is gone. Zheesh; about time!!!

Address to the US Bishops Conference

Right Reverend Arthur Roche
Bishop of Leeds
Chairman of ICEL

Los Angeles

Excerpt: Dynamic equivalence has become an outmoded idea: even its originator, Eugene Nida, ceased to use it in his later writings. Over the last thirty years specialists in language have become more aware that the form we choose for an utterance is itself expressive of our purpose in speaking. This is particularly important when we make requests. It is one thing for me to say turn on the light and another for me to say would you turn on the light? Both utterances convey the information that I want the light to be turned on by you. But we speak not only to inform, but also to persuade.

Good News ! Also, I'm glad to see the court ruling that church properties cannot be sold to pay sex abuse claims.

Great! About time some of those awful translations of Latin - done using flawed premises and sometimes with a theological agenda in mind - disappeared and were replaced with a reasonably literal translation of the Latin.

That's horrible. Catholics should be ashamed that thier church is using legal weaseling to get out of compensating people who were sexually abused by priests. According to the article the parishes actually belong to the parishoners? Ha! Let's see this ruling invoked next time a bishop closes a parish and locks the congregation out.

I believe this is the heart of his statement,

"My point is that in using a translation that is more faithful to Sacred Scripture we are teaching ourselves and our people to speak bible! Lex orandi, lex credendi."

One should use intelligence when reading an article! That ruling was a court mandated position, the Church was not trying to "weasle out of making compensation"period!

David,

No doubt that there have been some bishops who have contributed to the abuse problem. Yet, is it really fair to the people who have contributed their own money over many years to build thier parish churches to have them taken away and sold? These people committed no abuses. And - how much of this is now being driven by trial lawyers?

The new translation is a step in the right direction. It will not fix all that is wrong, but it is a start.

Glory forever!

And just while the Catholic Bishops are moving in the right direction, the Byzantine Catholic Bishops are moving in the opposite direction! What leadership!

What? confused Are we changing "And with your spirit" to "And also with you"? I hadn't heard that!
