Abba Isidore the Priest:
When I was younger and remained in my cell I set no limit to prayer; the night was for me as much the time of prayer as the day.

This topic is certainly less controversial than the discussion as to whether or not the war between the U.S.A. and Iraq is just. I couldn't agree more!

Woah, hold on a minute!!!

No controvery? Not so fast!

I thought this was the BYZANTINE Forum.

The poster only typed ONE period, opposed to the traditional THREE. I am aghast, appalled and any other appropriate "a" words.

I can and will never agree to the use of the single period. It is just not our way.

So you are Pre-Nikonian Periodist, I guess that makes you noncanonical!

Dear-to-Christ Ung,

I wish you a blessed Lord's Day!

A troytsa is not a sled, Troytsa (Trojca in Ruthenian latinica) is the Trinity and by extension the three-branched candle combo used to bless waters at Theophany and held at various times during services in Ruthenian and some other usages.

Troika is the carriage or sled drawn by three horses that I think you are referring to.

BTW, I love that fact that you use the Hungarian in your screen name! Let's keep up that Magyar identity!

From dictionary.com (and that's "dot" com!)

Quote
Many may have wondered why the word period has the sense “punctuation mark (.)” as well as several senses having to do with time. The answer to this question lies in one of the senses of the Greek word periodos from which our word is descended. Periodos, made up of peri-, “around,” and hodos, “way,” in addition to meaning such things as “going around, way around, going around in a circle, circuit,” and with regard to time, “cycle or period of time,” referred in rhetoric to “a group of words organically related in grammar and sense.” The Greek word was adopted into Latin as perihodos, which in the Medieval Latin period acquired a new sense related to its use in rhetoric, “a punctuation mark used at the end of a rhetorical period.” This sense is not recorded in English until 1609...
It is abundantly clear then, that the idea of using the word "period" for the punctuation mark ".", is a Latin innovation - no doubt attributable to the scholastics - that is a complete misinterpretation and utter corruption of the original Greek. I am certain that St. Punctuation Mark of Ephesus would have none of it. I am shocked, shocked I tell you, to find that this Latinization has made its way into this forum - er, agora. Gideon was probably posting a "full stop", or just making a "point".

Dear Ung,

Why then Ung and not U/Уж? That river is called U/Уж by the Ukrainians, Slovaks and Rusins. AFAIK only the Hungarians (including Hungarian speaking residents of that city now in Ukraine) regularly still call it Ung.

Slavs say Uhorod/Ужгород and Hungarians Ungvr for the same city, that is my point. I don't know anything about Certez but I now ascertain that it should be Čerte with the proper diacritics.

I just found it curious that someone with such a strong Rusin bent would use that Hungarian form, that's all.

I wish all a blessed Fast.

Tony, Ung was used to denote it was the Rusyn village Certez in Uzhhorod County and not the Rusyn village Certez of Zemplin County.

UngCsertezs (for all those Magyar-Orosz out there!) wink

Djs, just use the "square" notation, as it is Pre-Nikonian as used in the South-West Rus (Kyvian) recension!

Ung-Certez wink
