I am curious of how and why the practice of using repetitions of "Lord have mercy" to replace the litanies usually recited by the clergy came into being during the recitation of readers services like vespers. Just as an abbreviation? Are we suppose to still be praying for the intentions mention in the omitted litanies?

Blessings

Since the litanies are always concluded by a presbyterial pray it is considered improper for a reader or deacon to pray a litany that can’t be concluded since he can’t say the priest’s prayer.
