AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH: THE DIVINE OFFICE

It is my hope that now, with this translation of the Divine Office in English, the devotional treasures that were once available only in Old Slavonic or Ukrainian, will be revealed in this source of wisdom, life and truth. Let us every morning open our eyes to daily life, to its joys and worries, calling on God to be close to us and guide us with His words that ensure serenity and grace.

I apologize, I was unable to find the threads and meant to ask how it turned out. How does it compare to the HTM and Jordanville Horologions, for those that have them to compare?

In my opinion this volume for the price can't compare with Jordanville's Unnabreviated Horologion, St. Tikhon's Horologion or HTM's Mega Horologion.

For only $20 more one can purchase the HTM Mega Horologion, and content, format, printing quality, etc. HTM is arguably far, far superior, being the best English translation of Athonite usage available. If you are going to spend that much money, go for the gold.

I've used the Jordanville Unnabreviated Horologion at home for a long time for our domestic church prayer and for the price (less than half of this one) it is clear and above not only my favorite but also my wife's. And in the $40 range it is still a good deal for the content, print size (ideal for candle-lit reading), quality of binding, etc.

What is frustrating even more than content in my mind, is that the price of this book you mention is more than twice what the original Ukrainian Basilian translation can be purchased for, and it contains all of the abbreviations and errors that the original Ukrainian Basilian version has. Archbishop Raya's Byzantine Daily Worship at its price ($60s when I last checked) is also arguably a better deal than this one.

I notice your comments on the printing quality Diak .

I ordered a copy of this recently and it finally arrived on Wednesday - and I have to comment that I was very very disappointed frown . I can make no comment about the content - I don't know enough , but my Spiritual Father asked me to get it , so I did.

I contacted Stamford the same day with my problems, and asked if I could return it , and have in fact done exactly that. I do hope they will replace it with a 'good' copy.

I would be surprised if there was any quality control done .

I have been spending what to me is a fair amount of money recently on books, the OB Prayer Book from Erie [ what a joy it is and so beautifully prepared and printed ] ; the Lenten Triodiion and Festal Menaion from St Tikhons [ via Light & Life] and the wonderful The Divine Liturgy anthology from the Sheptytsky Institute and also this from Stamford. I'm so glad the others arrived before it - they are so well done - truly a joy to have and use .

Dear Anhelyna,

Among Ukies, there is still a reticence about using Orthodox liturgical publications - a carry-over, no doubt, from the Synod of Zamosc's banning of the use of Orthodox books.

But what can we do if the best liturgical publication in Ukrainian is by the UOC-KP?

And their style of Ukrainian is both literary and high quality?

The Basilian publications use a Ukrainian that is so bad as to be an embarrassment.

I would recommend you get the Jordanville Horologion, as Diak said.

One could also just download Fr. Whiteford's Reader Services which are excellent and user-friendly, especially for the liturgically challenged like myself!

Agreed Alex ,

But if I'm told to get the Stamford publication of The Divine Office - then I get it - I have no option.

Fr John Whiteford's Site is bookmarked and used I can assure you.

Speaking very personally, much as I enjoy using my Jordanville Prayer Book [ and there are some things in that , that I have not got elsewhere ] I find the Erie Prayer book is a joy , the language appeals to me and aesthetically it is so pleasing to the eye it makes it a joy to use . Why should we not give something as beautiful as that to the Worship of Him Who made us ?

Yes I have seen books published by the UOC -KP - they are beautiful and almost demand to be handled and used - for me the snag is language frown

I suspect I'm preaching to the converted here

I don't quite grasp who is competent to order someone in Glasgow, Scotland, to shell out that amount of money for a book published in Connecticut and printed in Ukraine.

Although I like the Unabreviated Horologion (Jordanville) translation better, for me, so far in using the Great Horologion from HTM seems to make priestless services easier for my daughter and I. However my Menalogion is from SJKP (Saint John of Kronstadt Press) so it does not flow as easy as if I had the HTM one.

In Christ,
Deacon Nikolai

P.S. Alex, I promise I will et you pictures on my icon corner very soon. I am getting an addition done this week and will have our Reader take pictures when he is done.

Well a wee update for anyone who cares wink

Today I received another copy of the Divine Office from Stamford - padded leather covers and altogether a much better edition than the first one I received - I would describe them as like comparing chalk and cheese smile

I do have to say however that there are still some matters/issues regarding the service I received - but I trust these will eventually be settled to my satisfaction.

I live in hope.
