Dear Alice:

The key phrase in the first sentence of the quoted article is: "Although it seems . . ."

I think it is but natural for journalists and other people to assume that the Pope, having been born in Poland, IS Polish, forgetting their geography that Poland abuts (Western) Ukraine (and other countries) from where people of other ethnicity could cross the border easily in the olden days.

Thank you all for your answers.

I forget the 'trickery' of the written word in biased news journalism! hehehehe! wink

God bless,

It is also worth mentioning that the Pope speaks decent Ukrainian, although there is no record of him ever studying the language.

Yours,

Dear Alice,

Yes, during Toronto's World Youth Day events, it was . . .

But I think the main reason why his mother's background isn't raised so much is because she wasn't around him all that long.

And if you had someone like the Administrator insisting that the Pope's mother was, in fact, "Orthodox in communion with Rome" or something like that - could you imagine the confusion that would reign among our Western journalists then? wink

I could see the headlines now:

"Pope's mother is Orthodox - that's why all the secrecy!"

"Pope's mother was just in communion with Rome - not fully a Catholic!"

"Pope comes from mixed marriage - that's why he is of two minds on certain issues."

"Which rite is right for the Pope?"

wink

Mea culpa.

I must rephrase my statement about news writers.

I should have said:

Some news writers are masters at exageration and hypebole particularly when they report on religion, politics, and celebrities.

I apologize to the news writers who dedicate themselves to fairly and accurately reporting news to the public.
