Anyone here familiar with the Monastre de Chevetogne? I had seen something about it before and noticed last weekend a CD of Nativity chants by the monks on our book table. My Blue Guide to Belgium says its an Orthodox monastery, but I cant really tell what its association is by the web site. Who is it associated with?

Dear Rilian, I've been there twice, on retreat. It is a great place to visit. The CD's are wonderful. You may want to check out their website, where the history of the community is given. If you have 'audio' you will hear the monks singing "God is with us!" from that CD. http://www.monasterechevetogne.com/index.php?taalkeuze=3 Attending Liturgy there, is worth the pilgrimage to Belgium. the unworthy, Elias

Rillian,
I believe it is both a Roman Catholic and Eastern Catholic monastery in one.
And I believe the Eastern Catholic follow the Russian Tradition.

-uc Actually, the "Eastern Choir" sometimes sing in Slavonic and celebrate in the Synodal style. They alternate this, singing in Greek with Greek chant. Some of the monks of the "Eastern Choir" wear monastic garments in the Russian style, others follow Greek style.

It is a Benedictine monastery. It has had a very interesting history and this is it's second home since it came into being. There are some very interesting books on the life of the founder of the community Dom.Lambert Beauduin OSB (1873-1960). Metropolitan Andew inspired such communities to come forth in the west before WWII. I beleive that before the war the Metroplitan was a frequent visitor.
The link in Rilian's posting explains all and is great!

In answer to the above posts, the Monastery at Chevetogne is a Benedictine house that is bi-ritual with both a Latin and a Byzantine Churches. I have been there countless times over the past 8 years and have developed a close relationship with them. The link that Hieromonk Elias gave is for their website which has an English section.
The are dedicated to the reunion of the churches, and produce a number of Bronze Cast Icons and Liturgical CDs in Slavonic. If anyone is interested in these, PM me for a I have a stock of their materials (shameless plug  ) .
If you have a chance to be in Belgium it is definitely worth the visit for a couple of days. A word of warning, make sure you call or email ahead for availability for they handle many visitors throughout the year, and are many times filled to capacity.

Everyone baptized into Christ should pass progressively through all the stages of Christ's own life, for in baptism he receives the power so to progress, and through the commandments he can discover and learn how to accomplish such progression. - Saint Gregory of Sinai
