Here's a link to a 1965 article providing a history of comunicatio in sacris between Catholics and Orthodox from a Roman Catholic point of view:

DECREE ON THE CATHOLIC CHURCHES
OF THE EASTERN RITE

ORIENTALIUM ECCLESIARUM

SOLEMNLY PROMULGATED BY HIS HOLINESS
POPE PAUL VI
ON NOVEMBER 21, 1964

<snip>

28. Further, given the same principles, common participation by Catholics with their Eastern separated brethren in sacred functions, things and places is allowed for a just cause.(34)

29. This conciliatory policy with regard to "communicatio in sacris" (participation in things sacred) with the brethren of the separated Eastern Churches is put into the care and control of the local hierarchs, in order that, by combined counsel among themselves and, if need be, after consultation also with the hierarchs of the separated churches, they may by timely and effective regulations and norms direct the relations among Christians.

Michael:

Are you sure the word is "communicatio" and not "communio"?

According to my understanding of Latin, the first is a rhetorical device where the speaker makes the audience appear to take part in the discussion at hand.

The second is a sharing in common, or communion. Communion in sacris means sharing in sacred things, most especially the Eucharist, but it can also imply that we can hold common Vespers or other services that will allow us to begin to at least pray together in a common way that is familiar to both Catholics and Orthodox.

Dear Theophan,
The correct phrase is indeed "Communicatio in sacris." Communicatio has a much broader meaning than just the rhetorical device. In terms of the communio/communicatio distinction--communio would refer to the general reality of being in communion, while communicatio refers to this or that specific act of communion.
