One of my Protestant friends is interested in learning more about the Deuterocanonical Books.

Where can I find a source that lists the passages from the so-called Deuterocanonical Books that Christ either referenced or quoted?

The Deuterocanonical books (also called the Apocrypha by Protestants) are part of the Old Testament. They don�t directly discuss Christ any more than the rest of the Old Testament does by way of prophecy. I have put together a short explanation of the Books of the Bible [puluka.com] on my web site. This includes a full list of the books under both their titles (Protestants use different names for many of these books which is confusing.)

The very short version is that these books came down to us in Greek instead of Hebrew. They are NOT accepted as scripture by Jews but are by both Catholics and Orthodox. Although the exact book list differs by community. The Protestant reformation chooses to follow the canon of Judaism. Their feeling was that the Hebrew canon is more original (an attitude that St. Jerome also shared).

Matt. 2:16 - Herod's decree of slaying innocent children was prophesied in Wis. 11:7 - slaying the holy innocents.

1 Sam. 28:7-20 � the intercessory mediation of deceased Samuel for Saul follows Sirach 46:20.

2 Kings 2:1-13 � Elijah being taken up into heaven follows Sirach 48:9.

2 Tim. 3:16 - the inspired Scripture that Paul was referring to included the deuterocanonical texts that the Protestants removed. The books Baruch, Tobit, Maccabees, Judith, Sirach, Wisdom and parts of Daniel and Esther were all included in the Septuagint that Jesus and the apostles used.

Sirach and 2 Maccabees � some Protestants argue these books are not inspired because the writers express uncertainty about their abilities. But sacred writers are often humble about their divinely inspired writings. See, for example, 1 Cor. 7:40 � Paul says he �thinks� that he has the Spirit of God.

The Protestants attempt to defend their rejection of the deuterocanonicals on the ground that the early Jews rejected them. However, the Jewish councils that rejected them (e.g., School of Javneh (also called �Jamnia� in 90 - 100 A.D.) were the same councils that rejected the entire New Testatment canon. Thus, Protestants who reject the Catholic Bible are following a Jewish council that rejected Christ and the Revelation of the New Testament.

I think the passages regarding the suffering servant - are direct enough. And in both the psalms and the prophets it is often Jesus Christ himself speaking about his life and such. That is why the psalms were originally named the Oracles of God.

Example from Amos (I think) �thirty pieces of silver - the price at which they valued my life� throw it away.�

So if it is Jesus himself often speaking about his own human life - in so many portions of the Old Testament - I would call that a direct discussion of Christ.

just remember that the 1611 KJV has the Deuterocanonical books, albeit in a section by themselves, between the OT and the NT. the Church of England held these books to be worhty of consideration, albeit, not canonical in the same sense as the OT and the NT. that is thier opinion, and they are entitled to such.

Dear Friends,

There is also no agreement on the full list of OT deuterocanonical books.

The Greek and Russian Churches have slightly different lists that include, I believe, four more books or sections than the Roman Canon.

The Ethiopian Church adds the books of Enoch and Jubilees.

In addition, we need to mention the UNWRITTEN deuterocanonical tradition of the Old Testament!

This is important when we discuss the unwritten Tradition of the Church as passed on through the Apostles.

When the "Seat of Moses" is referenced in the NT, there is no mention of this in the Old. It is a tradition that was accepted as a valid development in Judaism. Also, the battle of St Michael for the body of Moses - an unwritten tradition that the Apostles accept as perfectly valid.

Finally, we should also reference the many other Books that are not part of the Scriptural Canon at all - but which are mentioned in the NT and form a central part of our liturgical heritage to this day!

Books on the Passing of Mary, Joseph the Carpenter, John the Theologian, Andrew the Apostle etc. The Gospel of Nicodemus, the Birth of Mary . . .

All these are perfectly orthodox, but never made it into the scriptural canon.

They were read by Christians and the Church's liturgical prayers and festivals were and are inspired by them (ie. the Feast of the Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple, the traditions surrounding the Dormition of the Mother of God, the bodily translation into heaven of St John the Theologian, the death of St Andrew etc.).

At the end of the first Chapter of the Gospel of John, Nathaniel is told by Christ as he approaches Him that Christ saw him under the sycamore tree . . . Nathaniel breaks out into immediate praise of Christ!

It was in the Gospel of Nicodemus (I believe) that the story behind this was told.

Nathaniel, as a boy, became very sick and his brother died from the illness.

His mother was beside herself . . . but then she heard about the presence nearby of a "miracle baby" and went to see Mary who held him in her arms.

Mary immediately told her to lay Nathaniel on the bed-clothes of Jesus that happened to be under a sycamore tree . . .

When she did that, Nathaniel made an immediate recovery.

When our Lord reminded Nathaniel of this event, Nathaniel knew that the miracle-baby was none other than Jesus Himself - only he, his mother, Mary and Jesus would have known about it.
