Good news and bad news for Monsieur Cretien! Homosexual activity has always been assigned more severe canonical penances than fornication (the old goat isn't married is he? Maybe the whole thing is just "platonic" and he needed someone to iron his shirts and fry him an egg.
).
However, the bad news is that we don't normally get excommunicated for our non-schism-causing opinions, but for our personal behavior.
Even the Orthodox in the states never excommunicated any of their myriad of pro-choice Senators and Representatives, although they warned them of their greater responsibilty as public figures to promote Christian morality.
I hate politics, but maybe like you, am addicted in a way.
