Dear Zenovia,

Here is site that may help you Temple Gallery [templegallery.com] . Of course it's in London, but perhaps you can email them - their address is on page 2.
Or, possibly they can direct you to a reputable place here in the states.

Dear Gaudior,

I looked at the Temple Gallery icons that was suggested, and the only one that seems to resemble the background scene of trees and hills, and the style, would be the Greek Northern School of the early 18th century. As for the three figures in the background, they are so minute, that I never noticed them before.

As for having someone ask at the monastery, I never thought of that, especially considering that the only things to visit on Chios, are it's monasteries. It does have the date that it was repainted, and the monasteries name on it.

As for the Metropolitan Museum, they upset me. They automatically assume that I want to sell a religious icon, and have made me feel very quite uncomfortable.

I went once because I had bought a broken bronze triptych from a Turkish peddler in Istambul. He kept insisting that the one I wanted to buy was a fake, and that this one was real.

Now there was no reason for him to say that, because the price of the two items was the same. I believe they both cost $8.00. It was the last penny I had before I came home, and that was before credit cards. Thank heaven I didn't decide to bargain with him, because he might not have been so honest with me.

I got a lot of slack by others for being a fool, and believing a Turkish street peddlar, so I just had to go to the Met. and prove I was right.

It turned out to be early 19th century. All I could think about, was the poor Russian soldier that was probably carrying it before he was killed.

Dear Rose,

Thank you so much for the site. As I just told Gaudior, I seem to relate the style of the icon to one they have of a Greek northern school of the early 18th century.
