The aged Abba Moses and the young novice are traveling through the desert. As evening draws, they set up their tent, pray compline, and both are soon asleep. Some hours later, Abba Moses wakes his faithful novice. "Look up at the sky and tell me what you see."

The young monk replies, "Abba, I see millions of stars." "What does that tell you?" asks Abba Moses. The young monk ponders for a minute. "Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Chronologically, it appears to be approximately quarter past three. Theologically, it's evident the Lord is all-powerful, and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Abba?"

Abba Moses is silent for a moment, and then says, "You have learned much but you see nothing!?! Someone has stolen our tent!"

Everyone baptized into Christ should pass progressively through all the stages of Christ's own life, for in baptism he receives the power so to progress, and through the commandments he can discover and learn how to accomplish such progression. - Saint Gregory of Sinai

"At last the matador did what we wanted him to
He raised his sword and his aim was true.
In that moment of truth, I suddenly knew -
That someone had stolen my wallet!"

From a song by Tom Lehrer, whom I had not previously suspected of ideological links to the Desert Fathers.
