I read that the Syriac Church, the Armenian Church, and the Coptic Church keep a three day fast in honor of St. Jonah the Prophet, starting on the tenth Monday before Easter (i.e., about two weeks before Lent). It is to commemorate the fast which the Ninevites kept after Jonas gave the warning from God to repent.

Is this fast also kept by the Orthodox Church? Put another way, can an Orthodox privately keep the Jonah fast ?

Also, when would the Jonah fast start this year (i.e., is Easter calculated old style for this fast)?

Thank you for any help.

No, the Byzantine Church does not keep this fast. In fact it is partly because of the Armenian keeping of the Fast of the Ninevites that the Week of the Publican and the Pharisee is a fast-free week.

The Fast of the Ninevites is 1/29/07 to 1/31/07.

Dear John,

Certainly, we may observe this fast privately - as I do.

It is very meaningful, I believe, and it also allows us to share ecumenically in the riches of Christ of the Oriental Orthodox tradition.

The Copts also add three more days to the Nativity fast in honour of St Samaan the Tanner and miracle involving moving a mountain . . .

FYI, on September 12, 2007, Ethiopia will celebrate the . . . Millennium 2000 AD!

Their calendar falls behind the Gregorian by . . . 7 years and 8 months . . .

I know a number of Ethiopians who want to go to Ethiopia for this event.

Alex
