I am having some trouble locating an English translation of the long and short rules of Saint Basil the Great on the internet.

I did locate a version in French.

http://membres.lycos.fr/orthodoxievco/ecrits/peres/basile/in.htm

Does anyone know where I can find one in English? I would think that such a translation would go far in helping these rules to become better known and loved.

In ICXC,

Gordo

PS: Also, does anyone know the translation of the scroll in the symbol of the Basilian fathers above? Thanks!

I don't promise that it's still in print, but there is/was a translation of the long and short rules of Saint Basil in a nice series of pamphlets of patristic texts - and probably in some heavier and more expensive tomes as well.

Dear Gordo,

I found a couple of old texts on St Basil at the Internet Archive site. The first one is called St Basil and His Rule: a Study in Early Monasticism, by E.F.Morison, dating from 1912.

http://www.archive.org/details/basilsrule00moriuoft

and the second is St Basil the Great: a Study in Monasticism, by W.K.Lowther Clarke, published in 1913.

You can download the texts in a number of different formats, what I do is skim them first in txt to see if they are worth the wait for pdf.

Hope this helps,

Brigid,

Thank you for those links! Wow - I copied the TXT into a Word.doc format, although will have quite a bit of reformatting to do to make it useful.

Still this is wonderful.

I purchased this from Amazon yesterday:

It also looks like a good read.

God bless!

Thanks, Father.

Do you recall the name of the publisher?

Also, can you tell me what the scroll below the earth in the graphic above says? Just curious...

God bless!

Dear Gordo,

I was looking at a review of that book by an Episcopalian writer here:

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3818/is_200107/ai_n8957567

If you download the Internet Archive materials in pdf format they reproduce the books exactly. The only problem is that it can take a while. There are some amazing tomes available at that site, another one you might enjoy is Ancient Devotions for Holy Communion from Eastern and Western Liturgical Sources (1913).

For the moment, alas, I'm a failure - I don't remember offhand who published those booklets, and I can't read the inscription on that emblem. Have you tried asking a member of the community in question?

Edward,

Thank you!

Father Serge,

I will ask the BSO's about those pamphlets you mentioned. They probably have some copies in their library at the monastery.

God bless!

Gordo
