This sounds like an interesting project:

EOB stands for Eastern / Greek Orthodox Bible. It is complete translation of the Holy Scriptures based on the Greek text of the Old Testament (Septuagint / LXX) and for the New Testament on the official ecclesiastical text published in 1904 by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

The main purpose of the EOB is to provide an English text of the Holy Scriptures that is suitable for use by Orthodox Christian communities and individuals. Because it is controlled and updated within the Orthodox community, it is independent from non-Orthodox commercial publishers and can benefit from constant input from Eastern Orthodox scholars and theologians.

For the New Testament, the EOB is an Orthodox translation of the official Greek text used in the Greek Orthodox world which also takes into account the so-called Majority and Critical texts. It also provides extensive footnotes and Appendices dealing with significant verses such as Matthew 16:18; John 1:1,18; John 15:26.

The Old Testament is an updated edition of Brenton's translation of the Septuagint, a decision which allows for convenient access to the underlying Greek text. Doctrinally significant variants from the Hebrew / Masoretic text or the Dead Sea Scroll are documents in footnotes. The EOB also provides the Hebrew / Masoretic versions (WEB) of Job and Jeremiah.


The EOB provides over 200 pages of introduction material and appendices, including articles by the late Rev. Protopresbyter George Florovsky and Pr. Miltiades Konstantinou of the Aristotle University of Thessalonica.

Orthodox Christians are invited to take advantage of this edition of the Holy Bible and to participate in the ongoing improvement process.

The EOB is presented in honor of the late Archbishop Vsevolod of Scopelos (Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, in the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople).

It is available to download and purchase in print format; however, it is awaiting proper ecclesiastical blessing and has been presented (01/2008) to various hierarchs for this purpose.

I was able to download the OT when I first discovered the site so if you like, I could send you the pdf as an e-mail attachment, just PM me. It contains a number of introductory essays and notes. As I understood it, the first 2 volumes are not yet ready for release, sounds like it's appearing Star Wars style! It may be worth contacting the site owners directly if you're interested in purchasing a hard copy.

I downloaded the NT in the form of a free download. I notice that they sell both a printed version of the NT and a download version. Any idea what the difference is between the free download version of the NT and the one you may purchase?

I also have the NT (Gospels and Apostolos) from the Holy Apostles Convent, Buena Vista, CO. Anyone familiar with these translations?

Newbie here from Canada. I'm an Orthodox Christian (I go to a Ukrainian speaking parish under the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople). I was a long-time Evangelical of the Wesleyan and (later) Pentecostal variety before embracing Orthodoxy as a convert in the early 1990's.

The EOB looks like a great project, but it appears to be taking quite a bit of time to finish doing quality assurance and final editing on the OT portion.

The translation of the NT is excellent and highly recommended. The footnotes generally avoid theological discussion and focus rather on textual variants and Greek word analysis. From an Orthodox perspective, the extensive introductory notes and (back of the book) appendices are valuable, scholarly articles and treatises on several specific theological issues. In particular, the nature of the catholic Church and apostolic succession are discussed (from an Eastern Orthodox viewpoint, naturally).

Anyhow, just thought I would say hello and add my "thumbs up!" to the EOB.

The EOB site had it available for download for a long time but the link is gone now.

Several years ago I was able to download the complete Old and New Testaments. I had a disaster of a hard drive crash about three years ago and lost everything. If anyone who has pdf copies of the EOB, I would greatly appreciate if you would please make a copy for me. Thank you in advance.

I heard that they'll use Brenton's "Septuagint". If so, that would be quite sad.

I am really wanting to look over the NT before I decide to buy it or spend the money on other books I want. Actually, the text is no longer available on the website. The link still exists, but it is dead. Now they are offering a download of part of the OT book of Zephaniah.

Since I have been unable to get a copy of the NT pdf to peruse, can anyone who has the EOB NT tell me how they use it? Is it appropriate for devotional reading as well as for study? I am on a fixed income and money for books is limited and there are many good books out there I want so I need to be discriminating in my purchases.
