In the Orthodox tradition, through the years, I have come to understand that one should be reverend when receiving this bread, cup their hands to catch the crumbs, etc.
When one does not eat the whole piece because it is too dry or something like that, I have heard that it is okay to dispose of by giving it to the animals, such as birds, to eat.
Is it okay for your dog to eat it, or is that sacriledge? I can't help but remember one day when I had taken the extra piece given to me and put it in my handbag to bring home to one of my children who wasn't with me. I placed my handbag on the kitchen floor for a minute in order to wash my hands, and when I looked down, my dog's nose was planted firmly in my handbag and before I had a chance, she gulped the whole piece of antidoron I had in there!!

If it's okay for a wild bird, which you are not attached to, to eat it, how could it not be okay for a beloved member of your household to eat it?

I've heard (and have seen practiced canonically) that it's best to put it out on the ground in a forest or another natural area. I suppose this means that animals could conceivably eat it. Any other insights? PS: Alice - it's great that your dog has a sense of the holy!!!

PS: Alice - it's great that your dog has a sense of the holy!!! Hehehe...I wish that were, but unfortunately, she is just a little piggie that always wants to eat!!! On the other hand, once when we were having the house blessed, not only did she lie down humbly next to the Priest in the dining room as he was saying the prayers over the water, but she followed behind him into every room, and at one point, she actually bowed!!!

My daughter's guide dog once snuck, lightening fast, a gulp of holy water from a big tank like container which I think is meant for people to use to get holy water to bring home. It has a protrusion at about knee level where one could bend down and dip in fingers, which is where she found her opportunity when they walked past it. She's always very good in Mass, even ordinations  But your handbag on the floor wouldn't have been safe from her keen nose either.
