Dear Alex,
Thank you for your reply. I am curious; I have yet to see what a "Byzantine monstrance" looks like. Is it similiar to those used by Roman Catholics? Could you provide a detailed description or do you know where I can see an image of one?

Thank you and God bless you,
griego catolico

Dear Griego,

This would simply be a Latin monstrance adopted for use by certain Ukrainian parishes.

When Patriarch Josef Slipyj was in Lourdes, he used one during a "suplicatsia" as well and there is a picture of him doing so in the book "Unseen Stigmata" "Nevydymi Stihmaty."

Some Orthodox parishes in Western Ukraine also use them and I have seen the "suplicatsia" service in the back of their publications.

The Melkite Eucharistic service is different and is very "Easternized" whereas our service is simply a translation of a Polish service.

Fr. Lypsky once pointed out the slavish translations that we were using and said, "it is written in them, "pray for us" or "molisia za namy. Why not "pered namy?"

"Za namy" in Ukrainian can be translated as "pray behind us."

Patriarch Slipyj, as he himself wrote, went to the Church of St Neilos in Rome for Eucharistic Adoration daily.

Alex
