Dear board members:

I very much appreciate all the help in my questions regarding floating wicks, and now I hope that perhaps some may be able to help me a little further in a related area.

In looking for wicks online I noticed a great deal of hanging vigil lamps, and standing too, which I found very intriguing. However, I am curious about their usage. In a typical Icon Corner I gather that an image of Christ is on the right with Mary on the left. Some sites indicate that a cross should be located between them. Well, what of the lamp? One site I went to said that a lamp should hang in front of an icon. Really? Wouldn't that obscure the image of the icon? And does that mean that it is typical to have a lamp for each icon? Wouldn't that be quite expensive?

Also, if usually the icons are in a corner how does one normally put a cross between them? I really have never been able to hang something in a corner very well. Most items with hangers on them don't allow for that type of action, at least in my experience.

Sorry for the dumb questions but I find the approach of the East very fascinating and I would like to learn from it. Many thanks in advance for any help.

God bless,

Patrick

GLORY TO JESUS CHRIST!
GLORY TO HIM FOREVER

Hi Patrick

Many times there are corner shelves put into the ikon area that allow a standing lamp to be placed there.

The chains on the lampda can be lenthened or shortened as needed.

My ikon "corner" is actually a wall because of the structure of the room that it's in. I couldn't use the corner so I use the small wall near the door.

At the top, I have an ikon of the Trinty (from Sofrino in Moscow) then I have a crucifix and a hand-cross, the central ikon is now St.Nicholas but I rotate this one with one of the Mother of God. On either side of this central ikon, I have small angel ikons from a desis group. Below these are 3 small ikons of the Rublev's Trinity, Kazan Mother of God and Christ the Teacher.

I also rotate the ikon lamp that I use. It hangs in front of the central ikon. This ikon is also covered with an ikon drape.

I do have a picture if you want me to email it to you. Please email me in private with your address and i'll send it to you.

Dear Mark,

Many thanks. I sent you a private message, I hope that that works, with my email. I would very much appreciate the pic as it would help me to see what is at work in such.

But in the meantime, let me ask you this. You say that you hang the lamp in front of an icon. By in front of do you mean that the lamp itself is directly in front of it? Or is it somewhat above or below, if you see what I mean? Of course a photo would clarify that right up.

Also, what if a person had two icons, and this is hypothetical as I have none to be honest. Where would a lamp most appropriately go? Between them? Or in front of one? Or is this something which varies from person to person?

Many thanks,

Patrick

Dear Patricius,

I'm not Mark, although I can be a "medved" at times smile (bear).

There are special hooks that can go above an icon to allow for a lamp to hange in front of it from the top.

There are also such things for holding the lamp from the bottom.

One may place a lamp on a table in front of the icons or anywhere.

Personal choice and sense of decorum.

Alex, I thought that was "vedmed" not "medved", but you're still a "honey"...

I bought a neat circular brass candle stand from Bulgaria that is a minature of those used in a church for lighting beeswax taper candles and we love it. It is about 8 or 10 inches high and has cups for holding 8 beeswax tapers (seven around the outside in a circle and one in the middle).

We still use the hanging oil lampada but my sons (and I) love lighting tapers for prayer. A neighbor who keeps bees and I are getting supplies together to start making our own beeswax tapers since our taper consumption keeps going up...

When you get to making the beeswax candles, let me know; I'd love to purchase some... hard to find the real ones around here... I love the smell of those pure beeswax candles burning!

God bless!!
