Here is an article on The Holy Name of Jesus:

http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07421a.htm

Interestingly, there are pious practices and greetings that are indulgenced that bear striking resemblance to Eastern Orthodox and Catholic greetings. Read the article to find out. smile

Dear Dr. Eric,

I recently ordered and received "The Power of the Name" by Bishop Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia from Light & Life Publishing. Looking forward to reading it. Have you read it?

God bless,

NEMO

For those interested in an Eastern expression of the devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, archbishop Joseph Raya writes: "The Akathist Hymn to the Name of Jesus" was first composed in the ninth century."

Raya wrote in the Preface a published text by the same name: "Only those who seek a most intimate relation with the Lord Jesus, and those who are already aflame with onging to see His face, can be invited to recite this office. It should be kept a secret from the uninitiated who would not understand such lavish tenderness expressed to the Lord. Finally, it is to be recited in the privacy of one's own intimate life, and not in public.

"Jesus, my Lord, my Savior and my God you are the Lover of every human face in this world. Show me, a sinner, the beauty of Your face. Reveal yourself to every one of my sisters and brothers who will recite this present office. I offer them as a gift of my concern and of my love."

This office was published and distributed by Alleluia Press in 1982.

Saint Paul states, "at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth" (Philippians 2:10). There is great POWER in the Name of Jesus. The early disciples understood the power in the Name of Jesus, and they knew how to use that power to receive His blessings and bless others.

Many people do not realize the power that is behind the name of Jesus; but the devil does realize that power; he hates Jesus and wants to desensitize the world to His most-honorable and majestic Name.

It is our time-honored Carpathian practice to greet each other with "Glory to JESUS Christ!" Let's never stop doing this, for when we become ashamed of saying the Name of Jesus, He just may become ashamed of us. (Mark 8:38)

Within our tradition, the Jesus Prayer, "Lord JESUS Christ, Son of God have mercy on me a sinner" is another powerful testament to the power of the Name.

One of our Byzantine Forum members, Dr. Alex Roman wrote this beautiful Akathist to JESUS THE ALL-MERCIFUL LOVER OF MANKIND.
http://unicorne.org/Orthodoxy/sept2003/akathist.htm Please take a look and consider praying this wonderful composition.

Whatever form you pray the Name of Jesus is not important, as long as you remember Him in your thoughts and honor Him in your actions.

Jesus is the Name of Above All Names! Come, let us adore and bow down to the only Lord Jesus Christ our King and our God!

A great Lord's Day to all!

Ray

Dear Friends,

Another interesting point about the Lord's Name in the Eastern Church is the fact that every representation of the Cross (or any icon of our Lord) in the East SHOULD always have the letters "IC XC" inscribed on it or the first and last letters of "Jesus Christ" in Greek."

The "Christogram" as it came to be called was also symbolized by the placement of the fingers in the Hieratic blessing as well.

I thank Ray for his kind comment about my little akathist!

Alex
