I didn't get to see the Coptic Pope, but I purchased a Coptic Cross with his outline on it as a souvenir.
The Rules of St Basil are the most widespread monastic tradition of the Byzantine East, including their strict interpretation by St Theodore the Studite.
Byzantine Reformers sometimes draw up their own Rule, such as St Paissy Velichkovsky, the Teacher of the Jesus Prayer.
In about 18 rules, he set down that monks are to busy themselves with handicrafts, are to be at the Office and exercise themselves in the Jesus Prayer. Many Orthodox monasteries throughout Eastern Europe adopted this simple Rule as it encapsulated all of authentic Orthodox monastic living within it in a very straightforward way.
The influence of the Pachomian tradition is always keenly felt within Byzantine monasticism, including the rule of prayer for each hour of the day or night, either 100 Jesus Prayers, or else 12 Psalms.
The Coptic Pachomian Rule influenced Celtic monasticism in the West to a great degree through St John Cassian's writings of his visit to Coptic Egypt.
Celtic monks did prostrations, the only Western Church that did them, for example.
There is also mentioned in the Celtic Litany of Saints seven Coptic saints buried in Ireland, so the connection between the two traditions must have been very intimate at one time.
