Museum of Russian Icons - Clinton MA

Our clergy syndesmos group has a custom of going on educational field trips a couple times of year. For this one I had run into the CEO of the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton MA at Saint Vladimir Seminary's Ed Day, and proposed to the group that we go there.

The trip is well worth the time and effort. They have several hundred icons, some on loan from Russia. We spent two hours just viewing and in some cases venerating some of these jewels. I am only posting a couple of the 135 photos I took there.

Their website is here. [museumofrussianicons.org]

That icon of St. Nicholas is wild! The sense of foreshortening attained by the unusually large head on a smaller body that is larger than the icon board makes it look as if St. Nicholas is flying out of the icon. He is ready to protect his flock, especially with that sword.

Thanks for sharing!

Extraordinary. I have to head out there - it's a sin that it's only 25-30 miles from me and I haven't yet been there.

Here are 2 galleries from my visit to the Russian Icon Museum. The museum is located in Clinton MA, and definitely worth the trip if you are in the area.

They do not allow flash photography in the museum, so take this into account when looking at the photos smile

These are located in my Facebook album - hope this isn't against the rules or anything!

Dave,

Beautiful photos, thank you for sharing them with us (and making it more urgent that I get in the car and drive west to Clinton).

Many years,

Neil

Clinton, Massachusetts, is very near Still River, which has a beautiful Benedictine monastery with an excellent collection of Roman Catholic art work. One could go and see both in one trip.

Bless, Father,

I know where the Abbey is but didn't realize that it housed an art collection. You're making it even tougher for me to not do this soon.

Many years,

Just to add further fuel to the fire, many of the icons at the museum will be returning to Russia on May 1st, 2009! In my galleries, any of the icons that have red information plaques next to them are 'on loan', and gone in May.

Plus, admission is a meager $5.. and it comes with a free audio tour. In addition, it's pretty empty on a weekday, and I ran into & chatted with Gordon Lankton, the founder of the museum & owner of the actual icons.

Actually, the Benedictine Monastery doesn't so much "house" an art collection - it is an art collection (meaning that the art work is all over the house). Lovely place. When you get there, please light a candle for me. Years ago, when I was serving in Canada, I used to spend Latin Christmas with the monastics in Still River and thoroughly enjoyed it.
