Slava Isusu Krystu!

Is there an Holy Family Icon? Because a Filipino Marian devotee was inspired to search for a Holy Family Icon and found none so he search for an iconographer would be willing to do the task. The completed Icon was presented the the papal legate (Cardinal Lopez-Trujillo) during the offertory of the papal mass celebrating the 4th World Meeting of Families and then was presented personally to His Holiness Pope John Paul II in Rome a few days after. Now the Icon is in the care of the Filipino Marian devotee. Is this true, that this is the only living Icon of the Holy Family in the world?

He also said in an article that the Icon of the Holy Family is a blend of theological symbols of the Eastern (Byzantine) Church and Western (Latin) Church. Is it possible to blend two tradition, especially concerning iconography?

Thank you!
eumir

Eumir,

Yes, although not very common.

No, the Ukrainian Catholics have a Shrine to the Holy Family in Washington, DC:

Here is another Icon:

Yes, although there are differing opinions on doing so.

Haha, he obviously didn't look too hard! Maybe 10 or more years ago, my dad did one for Saint Mary's in Wilkes-Barre, PA. It is currently featured on this site:

http://www.byzantinecatholicfamilymatters.com/

Later, he was comissioned to do another such icon for an Orthodox parish. In this one, however, he made sure that Joseph was not touching Christ, to underscore that Joseph is the guardian, not the father, of Jesus.

Dear ad orientum,

Br. Claude Lane, the well known Benedictine iconographer from Mt. Angel Abbey in Oregon has done a few icons of the Holy Family which are quite lovely. You can see his gallery of icons at:
www.mtangel.edu/ICONS/index.htm [mtangel.edu]

Below are two icons he has written:

and

I hope this helps. May God bless you.

Dave,

Your dad's website is great smile . For those who didn't backtrack to it from Dave's link to the icon, but would like to see it

There is no 'Latin' Church.

You mean the Roman Catholic Church which used the Roman Liturgy (varied languages including Latin).
A very common mistake made on this board. I do understand what you meant. smile
