Quote from Matthew: Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him.
And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.
I suppose lately the Lord is showing me how dumb I really am by occasionally revealing the meaning of the above quote from Matthew.

As an example, the other day I was taught that "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God" means that those who are pure in heart will see God in all His works, in all persons we enounter, and in all our surroundings. I find this fascinating as it never entered my poor mind that this saying does not only refer to a heavenly reward, but also an earthly reward.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the other "Blessed" sayings?

I'm not giving up.

Surely someone has some thoughts on this subject. Or, maybe some teachings you heard that you'd like to share.

Am I talking to myself? Am I invisible?

Okay .... I give up frown .

Guess I'll have to go somewhere else to find some answers.

I suppose all good things must come to an end.

Good Bye

Rose,

I think the beatitudes are the endpoints of the virtues. I think Our Lord was calling us to allow the full Divinization of ourselves, including our most basic drives and psychological dynamics. I think when these are corrupted by selfishness and sin, they are the vices. But, I when we are divinized by Christ and His grace, there are the virtues. And, the virtues, in turn, produce the beatitudes.

Yet, Christ did not spend time on all of that discussion.

Instead, He simply laid out the goal of what our human qualities can be and should be in a Divinized life; therein is also the means to do so. So, for example, you wrote

I agree. I think the earthly reward is the foretaste of heaven that the life in Christ --by His life in us and in everyone and in everything-- gives to us. And that is accomplished, with the grace of God, by being pure in heart.

Please don't leave the Forum. Maybe people weren't as interested in this topic as you were. I know what that is like. But, it is still good to meet and share and communicate and support each other by our prayers.
